It would be far better to visit McDonald's and get a much cheaper bad dinner.
Ma Mama's Kitchen reviews and the management were very disappointing. The reviews made it seem like it was the place you must eat at. I probably should have not even opened the front door and decided to eat elsewhere when I actually saw the actual building, old and not very appealing. But I have been in many other locations like this and had great experiences and meals. Experience: Walked in, just after the opening time. Place looked dated and a bit dark. The greeting table, yes table, loaded the decorations, seemed to be clean and a man standing next to it. Was asked if I had reservations, I did not. He fumbled through the paperwork several times. There was only one group of 7 people in the entire restaurant. The dining area had about 25 tables. I was seated about 2 minutes later. I asked where the restroom was to wash my hands I was told where it was. I walked to the area it was kinda dark and almost couldn't see the sign. I opened the door it was extremely dark. I felt inside the room for the switch which I struggled to find it. I finally found it, it was not in the usual place where one would expect. The restroom was clean though.
Service: I viewed about 8 staff members. My waitress as well as another young lady bussing the table was very pleasant. Not much interaction with the customers though.
Food: Plate arrived very hot. The food on it was warm. It's presentation was good but I had no clue what the white stuff was to one side. I ordered the pan seared salmon. It looked cooked right. It flaked off as it should when it is done. The flavor, hardly any. I almost sent it back but I thought maybe it was just that bite, I was wrong. It was the most unflavorful salmon I've ever ate. I tried eating it with the spinach that was served with it. The spinach was uneventful in itself, not much more than basic spinach flavor. I tried eating it with the white stuff, they called it seafood. No taste, bad texture and very watery. I had thought I would try to finish but decided I had enough, less than a third of the meal was ate The waitress asked about the meal. I told her the above.
The reaction and solution: She apologized. She told someone perhaps the manager but no one ever came to talk to me other than the waitress which I believe it to be the manager duty to address the customer on a matter as the service the establishment provides it was conveyed that because I ate the portion of salmon and tried the other Items they would not offer anything other than a substitute. I informed the waitress that that is not what I wanted. She offered to box it up but I had to tell her again how bad the meal was and that it was garbage. I also stated that it wasn't about the price although it was the most costly item in the menu, I just wanted a good meal however it fell on deaf ears. The reviews about Ma Mama kitchen did not live up to the quality or experience. I will never and would encourage others not to darken their door. It would be far better to visit McDonald's and get a much...

Unprofessionalism by the owner was the final determining factor for me not returning.
I love a good dining experience. I travel around the country and dine out frequently.
Here in my backyard, we have Ma Mamas Kitchen. Several times I encountered poor service: Having to alert the staff I needed to be waited on, is one instance. They weren't paying attention to know I had entered the restaurant- there was maybe one other customer there, so they weren't busy. This happened on two occasions. The waitress ( there's only been one tending to the restaurant), would be slow to return to the table to check on drinks.
The food is good BUT the portions are incredibly small and very pricey. You better fill up on bread before the entree.
Cozy atmosphere.
I can live with some things but not an unappreciative business owner. She was rude to me when I called to discuss rates for a possible small group gathering. Maybe if the scenario was that I was approaching her with a complaint about her restaurant, she may have been defensive, but there was no reason for her to be rude to me, a paying customer. She just didn't want to be bothered.
I wouldn't have ever made a post about the pricey food or poor service. I probably would have still dined in on occasions, because it's close to home and as a customer, I will take some bad with the good, but pricey food, poor service and unprofessionalism is not a good combination.
For those traveling to the New Roads area, i suggest trying Morel's Restaurant, just across the street. It's a quaint, cozy restaurant, with a lovely view of the river. The food...
Read moreThe best creole cuisine in Louisiana. You will not find a better Louisiana style seafood restaurant in New Orleans, Baton Rouge or Lafayette. I have tried them all!
This place is by far the most reminiscent of my maw maw's authentic old Louisiana creole cooking. Local and region ingredients, dark roux and a touch of Caribbean spice. The French bread rolls were fresh and delicious. The cowan(turtle) soup and seafood gumbo divine by restaurant standards. The snapper, was fresh and cooked properly. Seafood pasta cream sauce was light and flavorful. Fried seafood was tender and not over salted like other restaurants in the area. Salads were good and even my children enjoyed there meal as well.
As someone who believes the best creole or cajun cuisine is cooked at home in your own pot, this place truly impressed me. From Commanders Palace, Emeralds, Ralph and Kacoos, Don's, Parrain's, Jubans, Mike A's..locally hottails, satterfield's and morels.etc..to all the rest take notes from Ma Mama's Kitchen before you proclaim to the world that you serve creole or even cajun cuisine. Anyone can call something a gumbo or say creole and cajun but few can put it in the pot and make it taste that way. Our food and culture has been watered down to midiocracy. Thank You! MA MAMA'S KITCHEN for caring about what you serve, instead of cutting corners for profit. We look forward to coming back when we need a break from our own...
