Los Avina Mexican Restaurant — Restaurant in Newberry

When we arrived there was noone else in the restaurant and noone else showed up until we were leaving. We saw one waitress who came to our table quickly (you seat yourself). The drinks on the menu weren't available, and they don't have lemons for the tea. They have a big menu with lots of photos to select from. There were 4 in our group and it took about 30 minutes for all of us to get our food, but it would brought out one person at a time with about 5-8 minutes between people. We had to go to the bar to ask for things we needed, like refills. My meal came with sour cream, which I asked for on the side, and then they brought it it had a short kinky-curly black hair in it. When we told the waitress, she just laughed but didn't offer to bring any more. The beef in the chimis and the beans were so salty that noone in the party ate the beans and half didn't eat the steak strips. However, the chips and salsa are very good (although they were kind of stingy on refills) and the queso they cover the chimis with is so, so good. We have been here a few times for dinner. We have never had to wait for a table and have always had good, friendly service. The portions are really big and prices are reasonable. We had fajitas for two, which came with two full sides plates so we each got our own beans and rice and salad and guacamole (it also comes with sour cream but we asked to leave this off). My husband also had the enchiladas. Their sauce is more brown than red and is a touch sweet but has a real mole flavor. I would say overall the chicken enchiladas and the chicken fajitas were better than their beef counter parts, but the beef was still good. We had a pitcher of margaritas, which was on special for $18, but they offer a pitcher on a regular basis it is just a little more expensive. We also had queso which is mild and creamy. The salsa and chips come with your meal and are brought out right away. On our most recent visit the salsa was spicy but it is homemade fresh so it varies on spice level. There was a sign on the door about price increases, we received a menu, assuming the restaurant manager had enough sense to make the changes on the menus that were being given to the customer. When our bill was significantly higher than what we purchased we inquired. The manager proceeded to tell us apathetically that the sign on the door was enough information. That he did not need to change the prices on the menu. The door sign in magic marker and construction paper had no prices. We were cheated. It wasn’t enough money to argue about so we left. We also had a giant cockroach twitching under our table, that I kicked away while we were eating. The food was substandard, the chips were stale. The waitress was nice but failed to inform us that the prices were incorrect on the menu. We will be calling the Better Business Bureau and code enforcement.
