Royal Hen — Restaurant in Newport Beach

We stopped for a bite to eat after an afternoon stroll, the hostess was nice and seated us right away. Once seated, we looked a the menu, and decided to order a beer and a champagne glass, some bread, the pot pie and the Brussels sprouts Caesar salad. The food was very mediocre, the salad was described as shaved Brussel sprouts, crispy capers and Parmesan cheese. Well, the salad had every green on earth, but Brussels sprouts and no cheese. I asked the waiter if my expectation was not correct, he said maybe the kitchen omitted them and brought me an extra plate of the same greens 😩. After that, he never stopped by to see if we were ok, if we wanted another drink or dessert. I had to flag him for the bill and he sent the bus person to finish the service. What a shame, the location is nice and the place is cute, such bad service and food is meh (The pot pie was average, but they don't care, as they never asked.) No Royal Hen here, more...

Wonderful food and atmosphere. Wonderful bottle of wine, zucchini appetizer was absolutely delicious. Our server forgot to put in our dinner order for an entire hour and did not apologize for it nor acknowledge it. He sent the teenage bus boy to figure it out for us, poor kid was so kind but it wasn’t his job. The teenage bus boy told us that our fries we ordered to hold us over would be comped, but we were still charged for them. Nothing was comped and no one acknowledged this mishap. We chose to not make a fuss about it as to not make a scene. Also, we were sitting on the sidewalk and I was truly almost nailed in the head by a car door. Maybe scoot tables to a different location. The food was good, but not particularly remarkable. Our filet was overcooked, the beer battered fish was so strong we could only taste the beer and not the fish. The Mac and cheese appetizer was very good. Overall good value for the inventiveness of the menu. The real gap was the service. From the hostess to the waiter everyone seemed either brand new or very overworked. Great attitudes and very friendly, but asking “how are we doing here?” When half our party had been served and the other half had been waiting several minutes just sounds silly.
