I grew up in Arizona and I was stationed in San Diego for 12 years with the Navy. On top of that, my wife was born and raised in Mexico. We know a little something about Mexican food. The Navy moved us out here in 2006 and good Mexican food was few and far between. I have found some good places and can recommend a few, but this place opened a while ago and I finally stopped in this week.
The menu is pretty simple. They don't try to do everything, so what they do, they do well. The portions are good for the price. A typical entree has enough food to feed two people. The flavors and ingredients are authentic to the Mexican food my wife and I grew up with.
In addition to the good food, there are some other nice pieces and reminders of Mexican culture. In addition to the things you would normally expect to see from Mexico, like the flag and sombreros, there is also a really nice mural with Vicente Fernandez, a woman painted like La Catrina, and the cartoon version of El Chavo. It's nostalgic, whimsical, and fun.

Read moreThe food was delicious here. The salsa is served warm with chips and was not spicy but quite flavorful. I ordered four tacos: asada, pastor, fish, and shrimps. I thought the sea food tacos were okay, but the asada and pastor were juicy and delicious, and the best part was the fluffy home made tortillas. Each tacos was filling and they cost $2.50 and $3.50, so I felt the price was just right. I also had "hibiscus water" which had right amount of sweetness and was very refreshing. The staffs are friendly and the interior is pretty clean.
Update 10/2019: I went again for dinner, and this time two other tables were occupied. When I went before it was just my table so the service was quick, but this time the service was pretty sloppy and slow. The waitress wasn't very knowledgeable when I asked questions, and she also forgot to give me napkins. So the food is good, but the service is not great when there are...
Read moreThis place is where the old backstreet deli used to be located. It's very small maybe 8 tables. The server was very nice, but I don't think she has ever waited tables in her life. She was running around doing a bunch of things but not getting anything done. There were only 3 tables, a 2 and 3 top and a couple with 2 kids. They only offer juice and water to drink. My friend ordered the chicken fajitas and I ordered the Taquitos. It took 30 minutes to get our food. The kitchen was sooooo sloooow. Not the place to go if you are on a lunch break. My Taquitos were bland and the salad and sauce for them tasted more like an italian marinara than a Mexican sauce. I tasted my friend's fajitas and that tasted good. The chips and salsa were fantastic. I don't think the chips and salsa are enough to get me to go back though, but who knows maybe they were...
