When I strolled into Mel’s Diner on the way out of the OBX I had high hopes. We were stuck in traffic and it gave us the opportunity to relieve the stress of our travels and reminisce in blissful food intake. However, this was far from the reality I experienced. Breakfast was the option, French toast was the choice, and the nightmare this began. As soon as I set my eyes on the stale lifeless bread I knew I had made one of the worst decisions of my life. Upon first bite, I realized it was much worse than that. I’ll save you all the traumas of my experience and just say that the French toast was beyond awful. I will more than likely experience PTSD in the future due to the psychological torment experienced by finishing all 4 slices. I’ve never feared much in my life, however I fear returning to Mel’s. Read moreLet me start out by saying I eat at this diner very often with my husband and our friend and I have never seen one thing get microwaved. YES they are short on staff so mrs. ELLA is really the only waitress in the mornings and she could waitress circles around all these inexperienced young girls that get hired and do nothing. MRS. Ella has worked there for almost 25 years and she is the best waitress I've ever had. The breakfast is always good never any complaints. I will continue eating breakfast here while mrs. Ella works here at mels diner. If she were to leave even though the food Is good i would go with Ella. I would absolutely refer this restaurant to anyone that enjoys a good diner. The decor is great every time I thought I had seen everything I find something new to look at. It's great. See y'all soon. With...

The eggs were terrific and cooked perfectly, the potatoes are not hash browns but instead are home fries or parmentier, cut into cubes and cooked ahead so they are not on the hot side but are on the dry side. The bacon is also well cooked ahead of time and somewhat warm. The whole wheat toast was tasty and well toasted on the griddle, just the way I like it. They even split the meal onto two plates which was very nice. The carpet is kind of tired as are some of the signs urging you to buy merchandise, but overall, not a bad spot. The Google listing says they have a drive-thru but I did not see one, and can’t find a way to suggest...
