Tonight, husband and I decided to try a restaurant new to us…. Sunqu, a Taste of Peru. Featuring Peruvian food, we opted to try it based on reviews that we had read and chatter amongst neighbors for how fabulous this place is. DISCLAIMER: We were not at all familiar with Peruvian food, so this was a stretch for us!
This charming place is located in North Fort Myers two minutes off of 41 on Pondella Rd. This remodeled small store is adorably decorated inside and brings its patrons to a true feel of another country. Though this locale may be unusual for an ethnic food choice, it is located mere minutes from some other fabulous restaurants. Happy to report that North Fort Myers/northern Cape Coral is attracting some great spots! But I digress……
Upon walking in we were greeted by Nicholas. Not only is he charming, he is also a master at explaining the menu and Peruvian food. He carried an interactive tablet which allowed us to see each dish, plus learn about what was in each dish. The menu is an eclectic mix of meats, seafood, poultry, vegetables, and more unique tastes such as lamb and octopus. Nicholas also explained the prep for each item, which was helpful for us.
We began with drinks. Their liquor license is still in process, but they did have Sangria and several Peruvian tap beers. Additionally, they have a corking fee so you can easily bring your favorite wines. I am not typically a Sangria fan, but theirs was perfectly prepared and not too sweet. Hubs loved their lager beer. Next time, I will absolutely bring a great bottle of wine to dinner!
Next up, Ceviche. We consider ourselves Ceviche snobs, and we were shocked that they have eleven Ceviche dishes! Nicholas again showed pictures and descriptions for each, allowing us to determine the pefect Ceviche for us. And boy, was it PERFECT! Served with plantains, this could have been a meal in itself. The fish used was Mahi, and we added shrimp. Perfection on a plate as the marinade was incredible. The only regret was that we ate it all, filling us up.
However, we decided to move on to dinner regardless of our full stomachs as the smells from the kitchen were captivating. Against my normal food choices, I chose their short rib dish (Seco de Beef Short Ribs) on the recomendation of Nicholas. This dish was the epitome of comfort food. The taste was elegant, the portion was large, and the sauce made me literally want to lick my plate (I did not). Hubs had a special of Waygu kebabs, and the taste, quality, and presentation was divine. Both dishes were some of the best food we have experienced in SW Florida, including Naples. It was evident that Oscar, the chef, has a true gift in his culinary expertise. This place belongs in Naples with quality, but not in price. Before we concluded our entrees, we were both determining what we would have on our next visit.
As a finale, we decided to try the 7 leches dessert. This rich, flavorful masterpiece was beyond anything we have experienced. This truly could be the culinary effort of a Michelin star chef….It is THAT good.
In closing, this was one of the best meals we have found in SW Florida. This is NOT fast food, it is a culinary experience in so many ways. Your dining experience will be just that - an experience, so plan to spend time savoring this unique place. The portions are plentiful, as is the true feeling of a chef and team that love what they do. The prices reflect the work that goes into this eating experience, we found them VERY reasonable for the amount and quality of food.
Five stars seems to small of a rating for this culinary giant. Well done, Sunqu!
EDIT: went back for a second time tonight. Wanted to make sure the food was really as good as we thought. It was AMAZING!!! Tonight we dined on ceviche, Wagyu beef kebabs, and lamb. Pics added. Don’t forget the seven leaches cake!!! This place is a must do, and they take...
Read moreMy boyfriend an I decided to grab a bite at this Peruvian restaurant because I myself am from Lima and love to support other Peruvian businesses! We ordered 2 Leche de Tigres to start. I have a shellfish allergy, my partner does not. My partner finished his, while the server offered a substitute for mine. While I do take full accountability for not specifying to the server beforehand about my allergy. I would have thought that at any other restaurant, based on common sense and my prior experience, would have likely comped the app due to the allergy. I was returned the leche de tigre with shrimp in a to-go box, as to not "waste the food" as we were told by our server. Regardless of any allergy debate, the leche de tigre was drowned in onions to the point of inedibility. So, I didn't touch my first shrimp filled leche de tigre and couldnt finish the second one due to the amount of onions sat at the bottom of the bowl. The anticuchos came out cold on a sizzling plate. My partner and I had to press them up to the plate to warm the cold wagyu beef up again. We didn't finish our last plate because we wanted to take it to go. Not because we were full from the previous food.
At the end of the day, the issue is not with a $15 leche de tigre, but rather the attitude of the restaurant owner refusing to comp a dish over an allergy on an already +$120 tab for two.

Read moreI recently had the pleasure of dining at Sunqu, where I tried their Churrasco a lo Pobre along with the famous Tiger's Milk (Leche de Tigre). Let me tell you, it was an unforgettable experience!
Starting with the Churrasco a lo Pobre, the dish was expertly prepared. The meat was incredibly tender and bursting with flavor, perfectly complemented by the accompaniments. The fried plantains and eggs added a delightful touch, making it a truly hearty meal.
The highlight, however, was the Tiger's Milk. This zesty and refreshing concoction was absolutely delicious, balancing the flavors beautifully. It was the perfect accompaniment to the meal, enhancing the overall experience.
Additionally, the Huancaina cream was spectacular—rich and creamy with just the right amount of spice. It paired perfectly with the dish and showcased the chef's skill in crafting traditional Peruvian flavors.
The portion sizes were generous, and I found the prices to be very reasonable given the quality of the food. It’s clear that Sunqu values its ingredients and takes pride in providing an exceptional dining experience.
Overall, I highly recommend Sunqu for anyone seeking authentic Peruvian cuisine. The combination of quality food, generous portions, and reasonable prices makes it worth every penny. I can’t wait to return and try more of their...
