Ugh, so wish the owner had not made such an unfortunate decision to be politically divisive during a difficult time in our nation. Because of his political (rather than business) decision-making, I must turn my high foodie review into a low star rating. Recent news reports plus the owner's unprofessional Instagram behavior tell of bad times at Allie's. These reports suggest, in my personal opinion, that the food quality and safety standards are possibly compromised. This does not make me want to purchase doughnuts from this store anymore. What a negative light the owner has cast on what used to be a Rhode Island cultural food landmark. Why did this owner want to upset his entire staff, management, and so many customers? Why did he want to compromise the quality of his product?
All over what? 8 cents? 10 cents? Allie's did increase the purchase price of doughnuts recently (also without warning his staff). So assuming one doughnut costs 80 cents, then a ten percent discount equals 8 cents. You chose to cause this much alienation of staff and customers over 8 cents? Seriously? Especially when you make extra money from only accepting cash and not credit cards. Granted, the issue is not money-driven. It was not a business decision. Specifically, it was an individual personal decision made solely by the owner. But guess what? You run a company of many, not simply one individual that can make choices without considering all other stakeholders involved. Business 101!
His reasoning? He wants everyone to be equal. That is a noble philosophical ideal. But it is not realistic, and it certainly is not possible even in a utopian society. More realistic is that we are all human beings with unique talents and attributes. Some customers do choose careers which place them in dangerous situations each day, while others of us do not choose those high-risk paths. Because of this, many businesses choose to give a small discount as a token of appreciation. Much of the last three months has been difficult for many. Sadly, Allie's owner is not aware of his responsibilities to his staff and ALL customers. He chose politics over sound business decision-making.
There are other avenues toward ethical decision-making that you could have chosen. Leave politics out of the doughnut shop. We have plenty of room for it elsewhere in society.
Previous review before June 2020, now disqualified as of June 2020:
This is a five-star doughnut shop. (The 4-star rating is based on the increase in purchase price recently. As Allie's only accepts payment in cash and no credit cards, etc., it would be nice to see them maintain and not raise prices.)
Onto delicious doughnuts: As far as quality of product and customer service, Allie's old-fashioned sugary establishment is excellent and deserves kudos for always providing top-quality and delicious homemade doughnuts and friendly faces at the counter. Having grown up in SoCal, I compare Allie's to my childhood and California favorite, Winchell's Donuts, which were the best growing up! Sugared, glazed, jimmied...no matter your favorite, the Allie's selection is full of variety.
As a testament to their success as a small business, Allie's Donuts is busy at all hours of operation. It is not unusual to find yourself joining the entrance line outside of the little building. It's really nice to purchase from a business with a legacy of excellent quality and...
Read moreAn absolute staple of Rhode Island, Allie’s Donuts🍩 are by far the best I’ve ever tasted. My first time ever tasting them was 8 years ago! And for years I was able to remember its taste until the very day that I finally had it once again. That’s how memorable and unique their recipe is!! They offer a wide range of donut flavors with one of the most popular being their sprinkled donut (the one that I would recommend the most). Despite the fact that I’m no fan of sprinkles, the way they do it is so spectacular that I’m able to completely ignore the sprinkles and enjoy it as part of the donut. I’ve had plenty of friends deny the sprinkled donut at first due to the sprinkles, but when they finally tried it, the sprinkled donut ended up being their favorite and go-to donut!! The donuts from this place range from $2.50-$3.00 per donut. They also offer a donut cake for special occasions that’s about the size of a large pizza (you must call in ahead of time for preparation however). My criticisms and cons about the place is that they have a very strict schedule of only being open from Wednesday’s through Sunday’s (closed Mondays and Tuesday’s), from 6AM-2PM, so if you’re an early bird you’re in luck! But unfortunately morning donuts isn’t everyone’s thing so perhaps you’d like to come in the afternoon. However be advised that after 12PM they stop making donuts so if you have a big order or want to secure whichever donut you desire, you’ll have to come before 12PM if you’d like to be safe. They also strictly accept cash, no debit/credit cards allowed❌💳. If you’re around, come here!! There’s no donuts like...
Read moreWhile i love the doighnutsits bs that you cant pre order multiple dozen , they tell you you'll have to wait in line. So today I waited in line with two very rambunctious small children I'm not exaggerating 35 minutes to get up to the front to be told they were out of Jimmy's and also be told if I wanted to wait I'd have to get back in line because I couldn't wait inside or off to the side like you used to do have you ever waited it in a very long line with a lot of people with two children under the age of five it wasn't going to happen again especially with how many people were in line again it would have been another 35 minute wait on the off-chance we might have gotten Jimmy doughnuts I left with children in 2 tears. This is not the first time this has happened and I honestly feel if you were able to order large quantities ahead of time this might not happen as frequently this is not the first time we've left Without doughnuts it will be the last I will not be back. As well we were in line I mean left with three dozen bragging that he got three dozen Jimmy Donuts. They've been open for years at this point you would think that they would have a better handle of the fact that the Jimmy Donuts pretty much constantly sell out I don't understand why they don't make more of them especially on Sundays.... an on Superbowl Sunday of all days they're obviously going to be selling quite a bit more for people bringing them to parties. In the past when they had run out you were allowed to wait off to the side until the next batch was ready and you didn't...
