Harold's Chicken Shack — Restaurant in North Township

Let me start off by thanking the original staff for taking back over and turning this place back around. I had a minor unpleasant experience years ago and didn’t bother to return. I had seen signs posted previously about new management, but as quick as I saw them I didn’t any longer. However, last night I was headed home and saw they were still open and thought let me give them a try again! Just from entry you can feel and see the difference! I am so sorry to not have gotten their names, but the, I believe owner and, cashier who checked me out was phenomenal! The chef was awesome too. They both just had such welcoming personable spirits and we stood and talked the whole time the food was being prepared, which made the time fly by. (time flies when you’re having fun!) As we said yesterday, sometimes you don’t know how much a person can need that kindness and I truly appreciate the friendly service I received yesterday. Now! On to that delicious food! I ordered the cat & wing combo which comes with 3 wings and 2 pieces of catfish with fries. Delicious!! I must add that I visited an hour before closing time, so around 10:30-10:40 PM, and as you can see the time does not determine the quality here.. fresh and tasty food all day long! That is also appreciated because you can’t say that all the time about food establishments. The fish was flaky and the wings were juicy. And that sauce? Perfect. True Harold’s mild sauce! And if you know what I mean when I say that, then you know! But if you’ve never had Harold’s and this review is your ticket to try them out, let me just say make sure you include some mild sauce! The wait wasn’t more than 10-15 minutes but I didn’t mind that either not only because of the service, but your food is cooked fresh to order. My meal was perfect, and they even asked about and included the coleslaw! This brought another taste of my home Chicago to my new home in Indiana. If you’ve ever had an unpleasant experience in the past, please give them another try! You will not regret it! And I myself will be back to patron again...

I’m updating my review based on the different management. The food has gotten better but I ordered the liver chicken combo. The livers were fried too hard. Unless a person ask for them to be fried hard, they shouldn’t ever fry them in that fashion. I have to crumble away most of the livers based on them being too hard. If I didn’t ask for them to be cooked. That way, it’s only right for them to ask. Frying them hard is not the way they should be cooked at anytime other than them being requested. Look at the picture. You can barely distinguish the livers from the wings. Livers are the easiest things for them to cook and they got it wrong, I waisted $17.00. Next time I’ll just try the wings. I will never order livers from them again. They don’t have any menus for the public. We try to patronize black owned and operated businesses but the owners and management always fall short in customer service. Run the business right and get menus. . Don’t ask if we want coleslaw. Give us everything that my order comes with. Put napkins in the bag please. If you put sides in the bag including coleslaw put a fork in the bag. This was my first time at Harolds today. It was a bit dirty, a bit old, the menu prices ever covered up with tape...the hours of operation seem to be a bit shotty. That being said it very much felt like a ma and pop shop. The food was the best chicken I have ever had in my life. It was about 3pm and just a few people were there so no big rush. The what I took for the daughter running the register seemed a bit stress like all food workers have been in the 2020-2021 years. I was as polite as possible, asked how they were doing and dropped a few bucks in the tip jar. Everything started to relax. I just got some wings and they came with waffle fries and a slice of bread. As I walked out to my car the cook came out (what I took as maybe the mother) and gave me a few extra sauces to try...very courteous and polite.

I see a lot of people being mad about this or that...but I am telling you, you are missing the point...the food is amazing and at a great price. At the end of the day that's all...
