Keneke's — Restaurant in Oʻahu

This is the hard part of doing a review. Giving a low rating. But gotta be honest so… here i go. My Husband brought home dinner from here. I was excited because i love trying new local places. I always try to support local if you read my reviews. My mom had the Chicken Katsu Plate. I saw her struggling eating it so i tried a piece. It was TOUGH. I have really good teeth. I eat meat and i have strong jaws. I was struggling myself trying to chew. I ate 5 more pieces to be fair. All the same. TOUGH TOUGH TOUGH. Gave my husband some. His reaction was the same. TOUGH. I had to take half of hers and give her half of my plate. My husband took the rest. We don’t waste food in this house so we ate it ☹️ I had the Teriyaki Chicken Plate. Was supposed to be all rice but was only two scoops instead of three. I always give my husband the extra but there was none to give. He wasn’t told no either so he assumed it was ok. One guy that did a review had all Mac Salad so why not? Instead i was short changed ☹️. What made it worse was the rice was mushy. Not happy. The Teriyaki Chicken was soft but kinda fatty. Sauce was good but the chicken itself was lacking flavor. Maybe marinating it longer would be better? My Husband had the Pork Adobo Plate. Said meat was dry. Im hoping it was just a bad day for them. They did give plenty napkins though and shoyu. Some places are skimpy on that so Mahalo! My husband did say the service was very good though. The person handling the counter was really nice. Thats why i gave two stars instead of one. Service with a Smile 😊 very important!! Although I probably wouldn’t be having a plate anytime soon, i love Shave Ice so if I’m ever down there i will give it a try. I won’t let one bad experience deter me. The food was edible. The chicken shoyu was DRRRRRRYYYYY. The teriyaki chicken was some really low quality meat. The hamburger patty’s were probably as low, if not lower quality than basic Walmart brand beef patty’s and the gravy tasted like that Heinz gravy from the jar. The Mac salad was more Mayo (also super low quality) than noodles; it was flipping disgusting. Here’s an idea, add some corn/celery/or even carrots to it with like at least some seasoned salt. The rice was done well, but I mean it was just white rice. The store front needs a serious overhaul. The garbage everywhere could have cut down on the amount of flys everywhere but even the garbage in back on the way to the bathroom was over piled. Had I seen that before eating, I wouldn’t have bought food here, but a local friend had recommended this (maybe a different location at least- we just out the name in and went). Seriously, there’s no way the owner takes pride in their business and keeps the place like this. The inside was FILTHY which we saw when we went to grab our food. I feel embarrassed for this business owner. Also, update the online prices because they are 3+$ cheaper than what you’re charging in person. My family and I have been coming here for years and Kenekes never disappoints (at least with the shaved ice). Kenekes shaved ice comes in large servings, is relatively cheap, and always a perfect snack after a long day on the beach. With that in mind I couldn’t recommend their other food. I got the tuna melt and the tuna was so liquidy it was almost falling out of the sandwich as I ate it. My girlfriend got a cheeseburger and we didn’t realize it was an extra $0.99 charge to have toppings. What kind of burger comes with just meat cheese and a bun? We also shared a large garlic fry that to be honest I don’t know how to explain the quality. They were not cooked well and had essentially no flavor. We had to throw them out.
