We enjoyed the best breakfast meal we have ever had at the shore at On the way cafe this morning.
For decades I’vee heard stories about incredible pancake houses and amazing breakfast spots at the shore only to show up to sadness wrapped in nostaglia. We try to scout out where locals go in every town we visit and usually the food is uninspired, drab and vaguely edible if not overpriced.
Super fresh, high quality ingredients, a broad menu that includes gluten free options. Serving up breakfast lunch and appealing to adults, kids and bougie brunch folks at reasonable prices despite inflation and tarriffs. Cute clean, outdoor picnic tables with umbrellas roadside, tucked in between the airstrip and golf course. Dog friendly.
We ordered ; cream chipped beef over crispy tots- it was a heavy plate of perfection.
Sausage egg and cheddar breakfast sandwich on brioche bun- there is skill in making a flat top cooked egg the consistency of custard! The cheese was melted into pockets of the folded egg stacked high, so when you bite in hot gooey cheese bursts in your mouth. The sausages are homemade, and have great texture and mild flavor. One was split on the bun and an extra on the side. Brioche bun was solid, held up to sitting without dissolving as we worked our way through two other plates before splitting and enjoying the sandwich.
Red white and blue crepes did not disappoint, loaded up with fresh blueberries, strawberries and bannana, two freshly made crepes, accompanied by a container of real maple syrup.
Even the iced coffee was great!
All this food was made fast and efficiently by Heather and Peg who seemed really friendly and had good rapport with regulars. Thank you for a fantastic breakfast at the shore that finally lives up...
Read moreIf you are not aware, this food truck is run by the former owner of Arlene's which was on Asbury, and is essentially "Arlene's Light". The food quality is very good, prices are in line with OCNJ, though the atmosphere is not. That said, being able to pull into the massive airport parking lot for free and be mere steps away from the easily accessible outdoor seating is divine!
While the food truck setting isn't terrible, we can all only hope that there are plans to replace the airport building that used to house the highly disappointing "airport diner", and to invite (or collectively beg on our knees if necessary) Arlene to take it on and run it with her unique style and offerings that made Arlene's the best dang breakfast place on the island for locals and shoobies alike! If anything is in the works, hopefully the powers that be will incorporate a repurposed classic stainless and neon NJ diner building with lots of windows on all sides for viewing the airplanes coming and going, which would make this dream diner a true destination that the former airport diner could never have hoped to be. If there isn't anything in the works to this end, there really...
Read moreOn the Way Cafe is a true local gem! Their sausage gravy and sloppy joe are absolute must-tries – they’re staples around here, and you can taste the love in every bite. Arleen, the owner, is the sweetest; she used to have her own spot (now Asbury Kitchen), and you can tell she’s passionate about what she does. She’s there every day, making sure everything is just right, and she offers so many vegetarian and gluten-free options too. Supporting local feels extra special when the food is this amazing! Highly recommend stopping by for a cozy,...
