Boxcar - Lake Mac ! — Restaurant in Ogallala

We called ahead asking if they could accommodate 11 people. We were told absolutely, shouldn't be that busy. We arrived and are told we can pull 2 tables together which we did. The tables were filthy. Very slow to come take our drink orders. Got our drink orders and a few appetizers. Drinks were slow coming but appetizers came quickly. Seven people got their food at the same time. Four people sat and waited. Finally asked what the hold-up was, and was told the kitchen lost our ticket. Seven people finished their lukewarm chicken fried steak specials. The other 4 meals finally arrived. One meal was cold, one meal was wrong, one meal was substituted without our knowledge. One meal was correct, a chicken strip basket. The manager brought our food out and we asked for refills on water and some parmesan cheese, she acted very annoyed and put out. It was disgusting. We asked if there was anything that they could do. The manager responded, "You go the food you ordered, you ate the food, you can pay for the food." It was obvious we didn't eat it as the baskets were still full. We told her how poor the service was and she said, "Well as you can see, we are very busy." But we had called to ask if they could accommodate a table of 11 and were assured it wouldn't be a problem and she was just interested in who we talked to when we called. Update: Doggone..went back 9 months after below review & ordered same dishes. The Boxcar mac green chiles are the only flavor that I could taste, the cheese is flavorless and tasted like it came from a prepackaged bag with sauce- not cheesy, there was some bacon but no spinach or other ingredients seen. I needed to add salt. The batter on the fish was grainy- not light and crispy and looked suspiciously like boxed fish sticks. We let server know &hoped if manager/owner came out herself, we could have explained what made these dishes so special, hoping for a change if we came back & tried again, but she didn't come out. We got 10% off, which we didn't want & just gave back in servers tip. Prior review fall 2023: Fish n Chips has light, crispy batter on ample, firm pieces of whitefish. Their homemade steak fries are perfectly salted. The Boxcar Mac n Cheese is full of many flavorful blends of ingredients - none overpowered! Bacon, chicken, roasted red bell peppers with light amounts of spinach and crunchy toasted panko (breadcrumbs). First time visiting Lake McConaughy on September 14, 2024 and our good friend who lives on the lake told us to check this place out, so we did!

It took a little bit to get service, but once we got the servers' attention, it was smooth sailing after that! Aubrey took great care of us while we were there and she was very friendly and attentive even though she was very busy. We appreciated her service and friendly smile, especially since we were newbies.

We came in on a Saturday night so it was pretty busy with the college football crowd. Very cool bar and had a great, lively atmosphere! I didn't have a good chance to look around because it was so busy, but definitely recommended stopping in if you're in town or staying at the lake. Food was really good (I ordered a burger and he ordered the wings) and the prices were reasonable. Good selection of beers and drinks too. Lots of tv's so no matter where you're sitting, you have a good view of any games playing.
