For those familiar with the building and its history, you will absolutely adore the tasteful renovation of this space and conversion into (forgive me) its second chapter. Lisa and Richard have done a wonderful job of giving this space new life and turning it into a place again you would like to spend hours.
While the building is beautiful, the beer is likely the reason you're coming to Second Chapter, and you won't be disappointed. We did a sampler with all 9 beers they had on hand and there's definitely something for everyone in their flight. My wife and I enjoyed all of the beers, but certainly had our favorites. Surprisingly, I think I enjoyed their Trashy Romance Seltzer the best, and I'm not ordinarily a seltzer or a cider guy, but it's just so dang crisp. It's even better with the cinnamon sugar rim. My wife liked the Drunken Sentinel the most, an American Pale Ale. Lisa informed me they are working on adding an IPA and an oatmeal stout that I'm very excited to come back to try.
Lake Mac Shack is located in the parking lot. We had a wonderful meal that we were invited to bring into the brewery to enjoy with our beers. We recommend sampling their food too! The meatball sandwich is the best I have had anywhere!
On a warm February Saturday afternoon, this was not a place you'd be able to snuggle up with a book and a beer since the place was packed, but it's definitely not a dark and dingy bar filled with college students and frat guys. Bring your group here, you'll be able to have a conversation at a comfortable volume but not feel like you're being too loud. If you like breweries for the beer and the atmosphere, you're definitely going to love Second Chapter Brewery. We look forward to...
ย ย ย Read moreWe were in the fortunate position to talk a while with Richard, the owner, who was friendly, very knowledgeable about beer and the brewing. He shared the interesting history of the building with us. The interior is beautifully crafted using parts of the former library. The total setup and bar are very nice, and used bookcases and wood of the original library.
Clearly Richard is brewing excellent beers. Kees tried a tasting selection of the various beers. Kees appreciates nicely balanced, and sometimes strong beers, think of Belgian triples. In the tasting menu was also the Bobbyโs Belgian Strong, an outstanding beer in this category.
After a while we had to let go of Richard, and we took several cans of the delicious Helles Bock with us. This would easily be a great beer in any German competition of this kind. We highly recommend to make an effort to stop at Second Chapter Brewing. The tasting of various outstanding beers will open your mind to many flavor possibilities. Even when you are the designated driver this is a great place to hang...
ย ย ย Read moreIf you drive by Ogallala and donโt stop here, you have done yourself a great disservice. Itโs an awesome place in a town where you wouldnโt expect to find something like this. My wife and I have stopped at breweries all across this great nation (which may qualify us as experts at this point) so I feel confident in saying that the beer here is top-notch! Yeah, the atmosphere is fantastic and unique, and the staff are witty, smart, informed and wonderful, but the beer!!!! We would have loved to have spent more time here, but an encroaching Great Plains thunderstorm was rolling in on us from the west and we needed to stay ahead of it on our trek eastward. We...
