My experience at Bedlam BBQ was representative of how OSU feels every year during Bedlam after they get whooped - they could have done much better. Let's start with the good - the jalapeno sausage was delish and the brisket was alright, not a ton of flavor (even smoke) but it was super tender. Unfortunately the pros stop there, even though I wish they didn't. Mains - as mentioned above, the jalapeno sausage was great and the brisket was fine, but we also got the ribs and my friend said "they do fall of the bone, but there is no flavor". There didn't appear to be a rub of any kind (on anything) and so all you had was the meat - which for really good BBQ should be enough, but in this case it wasn't. Sauces - regular and regular? They claim to have a spicy sauce, but there was really no kick at all; we thought maybe they had put the regular sauce in the red bottle, if that tells you anything. The regular sauce was pretty good though. Sides - we ordered cowboy beans, collard greens, mac and cheese, and coleslaw none of which were good. If you have ever had the canned "Ranch Style" beans in the black can from the grocery store, then you have had the cowboy beans from Bedlam. Previous cowboy beans I have had included little pieces of brisket in them and have a little sweetness and kick - definitely homemade. Not these. These were literally the canned beans. So disappointing. The collard greens also had no flavor and I know greens can take on some amazing flavor, but these just fell short. The mac and cheese, though creamy, was not very cheesy at all. The coleslaw was described as "ok, probably the best side we got", which is sad in itself. I've had this establishment on my "want to go" list forever and I'm sad it didn't fair better honestly. I probably wouldn't return as there are other BBQ places with way better BBQ than what I experienced here.
Side note - their outdoor patio area is EPIC!! Absolutely beautiful and perfect for events, dinner by the fire, etc. Five...
Read moreVery nice people working there. Helpful, courteous, professional. Went there with a co-worker after passing by on a drive and seeing the sign. My friend ordered the 2 meat platter with brisket and ribs; I ordered the same with smoked chicken and smoked bologna. Friend ordered a salad and potato salad; I ordered both the cowboy beans and the regular baked beans as well as an extra side of cole slaw.
When the food came out, they brought out two plates with brisket and ribs; no smoked chicken or smoked bologna on mine. Decided against sending it back.
Sauces......mild sauce wasn't bad, but the hot sauce was fantastic.
Meat....ribs were not fall off the bone (which no good BBQ should be cooked to that status); good crispness on the meat. Could use a few more spices in the rib rub; basically tasted like salt and pepper. The rib was done correctly. Brisket.....not much crisp bark to the outside, which, as a Kansas City BBQ lover, I am used to eating. The meat was a little dry in spots. Again, could use a little more spice in the rub.
Cowboy beans.....just like chili, like the young man who took my order told me. Not bad. Wasn't as spicy as was described at the register, but not bad. Regular baked beans were not bad; brown sugar sweet was the overall flavor of the beans. Not used to that sweet of beans. Doesn't mean they were bad, just means they were sweeter than I am used to or prefer.
Coleslaw.....kinda dry. The taste was good. Just not the moist consistency I like. Was like eating a salad without dressing.
Ordered the honey sriracha deviled eggs. Pretty good flavor. The egg yolk filling was a little too liquidy; kind of like a watery sour cream consistency. I'm used to a firmer filling in a deviled egg.
Great sweet tea!
Overall, I would eat there again. Not my favorite "gotta-have" kind of bbq, but I...
Read moreStopped in to Bedlam Bar-B-Q Bar & Grill today, Friday, just before 5PM. My 1st time there. The location at 610 N.E. 50th St. is very noticeable bcuz of their business sign outside the bldg. Parking on the FRONT of the building is limited, but I DID see parking available on the back side of the restaurant. The entry is quite small. Felt like I was walking in to a small pub. Interior of Bedlam Bar-B-Q is cozy and intimate. Seats about 50 to 60 ppl. Looks to be family & kids 'friendly'. Native American decor is impressive, but I felt like I was in a man-cave! 🤤 No outside view at all when dining in. I ordered the pulled pork dinner w/mac & cheese and green beans. Added a medium 'serve yourself' beverage (lemonade) for a total of $12.90 incl tax. The meal arrived w/in 5-6 min. and looked tasty. It was! 👍😁 Pulled pork was juicy and tender. After adding some 'mild' Bedlam BBQ Sauce to it, I almost placed another order for take-out! Meal came w/a slice of Texas toast that was grilled on ONE SIDE!🤤 Never saw THAT before! 😯 Wasn't excited about a soft side on my Texas toast but, maybe, that's their 'thing'. There were only 3 other customers at the time (a mom & 2 kids) so I couldn't get a feel for Bedlam Bar-B-Q's 'efficiency'..how well they handle a larger # of diners. 🤔 Worthwhile experience bcuz I've passed by this eatery for the last few years but never gave 'em a try. On the other hand.. While refilling my beverage, I noticed Bedlam Bar-B-Q has outside dining at the rear of the restaurant! 🙄 Now, THAT looked kinda sexy! I will definitely return again during a busier time to experience that outdoor area of the restaurant! For the money, Bedlam Bar-B-Q is a bargain. A (local) favorite...
