Cool space and interesting beers. This was my second time visiting. The first time was A+! This time, though, I felt unwelcome by our server. We were a group of 4 adults with a couple kids, and we were scolded several times for slightly encroaching on a neighboring (empty) table.
Example: when taking my drink order, it was closer for me to borrow the menu at the next table than to reach across our table. Our server did not like that, and told me that this table would be filling soon and I had to stay in my own space. I thought that was bizarre, since the place was maybe one-third full at this point, and I certainly wouldn't have grabbed a menu from an occupied table, and I returned it to its spot! But, I shrugged it off.
However, he came back 2 more times to warn us about the impending occupation of the neighboring table! It was so strange. One of the kids had slid over on the bench that the two tables shared so that she was briefly slightly in that table's "territory." Before I could pull her out, there was our server admonishing us again.
He also seemed just generally annoyed by the presence of our children, and curtly told us to go get our own water when we ordered it for the kids (along with our food and beer orders--we weren't JUST ordering water).
Eventually a different server started helping us (apparently the first one couldn't bear us another minute); she was extremely nice. But, we felt unable to truly enjoy ourselves, since we were afraid we were going to be scolded at any moment.
Based on my previous visit, I was under the impression that families were welcome here--there are high chairs available as well as a good selection of kids puzzles and toys. That was a main reason we chose Vis Major to bring our out of town friends here to visit. But based on this experience, I definitely wouldn't return with kids.
I am all for kid-free establishments if that is the vibe you are going for, but I felt like I got mixed messages. If you don't want families in a space, why have toys available? Maybe it is just the one server, but I feel like we made a mistake by visiting with our family. Oh, and that neighboring table was STILL empty...
Read moreNice comfortable brewery to go hang out with friends and get a drink with some tasty pizza. I liked that there were no tvs in the place so you could concentrate on who you are with. I was visiting with a group of friends. We ended up sharing/swapping slices to try multiple pizzas.
The pizza crust was much better here than i expected. It had a bit of a bread like texture/chew. A little thicker crust but cooked through (I've had a few raw in the middle pizzas from other places so this matters to me).
The chorizon (5 stars) was my favorite out of that one and the pie one (3.75 stars). I tried the crab Rangoon (3 stars) and wasn't the biggest fan, but I'm generally not a big crab Rangoon person.. just not big on that sweet chili on my pizza. If you like it though this might be for you as my friends who love crab Rangoon liked it.
Service was very friendly at the bar. They seemed a bit understaffed tonight so service was a bit slower. We had to wait awhile to find someone to close the bar tab out.
Parking is available in a lot across the street. It seems to be accessible from center Street. I missed the turn however, so ended up doing Street parking as there was some directly in front of the...
Read moreClearly a lot a time and expense went into decorating this beautiful bar, with Catholic Church style overhead lights, beautiful mural, and pressed tin wall décor adding a classy tone. Unfortunately, the beer was terrible. Neither the porter or stout listed on the website were available, but a blood orange ale was nice—tart, light, with a quick finish. We sampled 5 beers, but none were remarkable. The Octoberfest was undrinkable and tasted like soap. Service was…shall we say… abrasive? After our first round of tastings, we gave up on food or more drinks, and just cashed out. They were not busy, were uninterested in customer service, and served below average beer. I was really looking forward to liking this place, as it is along the Field Club Trail....
