My family and I just stopped by Roxey's for the first time ever to grab a bite to eat after a day of picking blueberries and I must say that it was a fantastic little dive. The best burgers in town, hands-down, and the owners were just as friendly as can be. I can't believe that I've never been in there before.
One of the downsides of local gems such as Roxey's these days is that nobody wants to work anymore since Michigan is quickly becoming a welfare state like California or New York. As soon as we walked in, the owners were up front and told us that they're understaffed and have been working open to close for who knows how many days/weeks/years now, and asked for patience as they might not be able to get to us as quickly as we'd like. We weren't in a hurry, and there was an open table large enough for our part of seven, so that wasn't a problem. With that being said, we still had our orders taken and food on the table faster than we anticipated, so zero complaints there.
Unfortunately, the couple that came in after us wasn't so forgiving, decided that waiting wasn't worth it, and got up and left after sitting for five or ten minutes. You could tell the owners took it pretty hard. They're goal is to make the experience the best that they possibly can for all of their customers, but when you're holding down the fort from open to close without any help, you can only spread yourself so thin.
Keep that in mind if the place is hopping, and don't take it personally if you're waiting for a few minutes. Instead of waiting and being impatient or rude, just stand up, walk three feet to the bar, and get yourself some drinks while you're waiting for someone to take your order. If your legs ain't broken, there's no excuse not...
Read moreFirst of all, I would frequent Roxeys everytime I came to my home town of Ontonagon . Great food, ( Reuben & sweet pot fries were my favorite... pleasant & friendly bartenders/ servers. That was then...this is as of July 21st 2019....New owners.... our server had major attitude to start with. She didn't seem to mind that she was working for tips & her service & attitude certainly reflected that. In my mind as a former server group= $$$.We were a family group & were ALL in consensus re the lack of attentiveness & surety for the enjoyment of our meal. For example. Several people drinking water. No pitcher of water placed on the table for her's & our convenience. Was given look & sound of disgust when I sent my sweet potato fries back, as they were burned. The ones that she replaced were very dark ( almost burned also). Or #3 doesn't give a whit. She seemed more interested in chatting up a customer at the bar rather than making sure that we had what we needed. IT was not busy when we got there ! As an experienced, previous, server, this tells me #1 that the oil was OLD & hadn't been changed as needed.#2 That any server, worth their salt, would have never brought them to the table to begin with. So in my experience as a restaurant goer & former server, repeat business is the livelihood of any good restaurant. Note to owners: you are sitting on a gold mine....better pick...
Read moreWe had a family dinner here on vacation. There were 10 of us. We managed to move a few tables together. This place is very noisy (I think some people had been at the bar for awhile) The waitress was very curt and unsmiling. I ordered the nachos and she asked me if I wanted them with meat and cheese. I said yes. I was kind of surprised when they came as all there was on the nachos was meat and cheese. It wasn't real cheese either, it was that liquid stuff you get at stadiums. A small side of bland salsa and sour cream. I didn't eat much. My aunt was served sweet potato fries that were burnt a dark brown color. When she requested replacement fries the waitress acted like it was a sin. The others at the table said their food was adequate but the service was terrible. Instead of refilling our water glasses, the waitress stayed behind the bar chatting with other customers. I don't think I...
