We make this out mid-drive stop. Most times I would rate them 5 stars but this stop you are asking about was not a good experience, actually I think it may be our last. Business owners must remember customers do not need to spend our money at your establishment. It's a choice, just as customer service is a choice. I'll spend my money were I'm treated respectfully. The gal in front of us placed her order. We stepped up and was told to go inside to order, they were closing the walk up window.(we were the only ones at the window) We went inside waiting behind a large group of 6. Finally we order. Two simple cones. The order taker, cashier knew the next person who orders 1 cone. He gets his order before ours. But it's against health code to handle money and touch food. The cones were not in wrappers that were handed to her instead of us which normally happens. I checked the clock it was not closing time. Customer service dictates. Why should I pay someone to do that to us, plus the cones were not as they use to be. We dont plan on paying people to break health codes, touch our food with dirty hands, besides the poor judgement of asking us to stand behind all those orders after waiting 20 minutes outside. If this was our first visit I would have...

I completely agree with the other posts - the food & treats have definitely changed for the worst. My husband loved the shrimp basket and ordered it this year it was changed to popcorn shrimp and not good. I ordered a pizza burger last weekend along with a corn dog - I now have to pay EXTRA for marinara ! How can they call a burger that is just burger with cheese a pizza burger? Corn dog was way over cooked.

Went there yesterday to get ice cream. My husband always gets the twist cone dipped in chocolate. The previous staff knew that you had to place the cone in the freezer for a little bit before dipping into warm chocolate. This crew didn't. Ice cream was melting through the chocolate even before they handed it to me.

So, all summed up: food not as good, treats not as good, staff not as friendly 😔

Look at the dates of the reviews. Majority of favorable reviews are for the previous owners. New owners took...

Update: Much improved experience (Aug 2022) - revising my review.

I posted a pretty scathing review back in April after this place opened to new management. I was pretty unhappy with multiple things about the experience, which was especially bad contrasted with my good experiences the prior year.

As I promised, I did go back last weekend to give them another chance. I'm happy to report that most of the things I previously griped about had been fixed. The burgers were actually good, juicy and not over done. They made the Cowboy Up burger like I remembered from the past. Service was better. They weren't out of ketchup in the dining room this time.

Unfortunately I have noticed others have posted much more recent reviews that show some are still having bad experiences. However, for what it's worth, they earned a return visit from...

Tip-Top is more than just a dairy bar! We loved our bacon cheeseburgers (added grilled onions, pickles, ketchup, mayo) on the fresh buns from the local Roer's bakery. Also, they have our favorite style of french fries (lightly battered and salted). The ice cream treats include a variety of mouthwatering options! I enjoyed my cookie dough cyclone (like a blizzard or concrete mixer), my wife enjoyed her chocolate shake, and our dog Thor enjoyed a pup cup (and some chicken strips). Small indoor seating area and some outdoor seating available as well. They also had a covered concrete patio under construction when we visited for the first time on 6/21/25. Small parking lot attached with 10-20 spots available maybe.

A fun stop when driving up north to Alexandria. Good street parking on wide small town road. Fast service with the two windows. On my late July visit the gal at the counter was helpful in recommending me ways to get my chocolate Dole whip cone twisted when she could tell I was lost with the menu and what to order. Wasn’t rushing, but engaging. Loved the variety of folks milling around enjoying their treats outside in the hot summer. Character and charm and community. 10/10.

The tip top is an iconic ice cream stop for small town America. Complete with a walk up window for ordering it’s a must in the summer. We’ve been going since I was a kid and I brought my toddler there this weekend! The excitement for ice cream, slushees and cyclones never goes away. Ages 2-80 we’re enjoying their afternoon amongst us. Friendly staff, delicious treats and great prices!
