The Homestyle Cafe — Restaurant in Oskaloosa

We were visiting from out of town so thought we would try it. They took our order pretty quickly and we got drinks fast. However we then waited over 40 mins for our food. We witnessed at least 4 other parties place orders who got their food and a couple groups finished before we got our food. They definitely tended to locals first and they never even approached us to explain the delay. Once we got the good the 2 cheeseburgers were OK, the chicken strips were dry and the meatloaf was something you would get at school lunch. Definitely not the quality or homemade feel you expect from a small-town Cafe. The homemade ranch they are so proud of is more of a mayo/tarter sauce nothing like any ranch I have experienced. Then when ready to pay two locals were allowed to skip the line and pay before us. Again not professional. So if you are not a local skip the place and even if you are local skip everything but...

Food was basic at best. Service was pretty rough. We ordered our food 10 min before the others in our party arrived to the restaurant. Well, they were finished with their meals before our was ever served. It was eggs and toast..... When it was brought to the servers attention she just said "it's coming" and walked away. I'm sure she forgot to put the ticket in. Just tell us that, we would have been understanding. We had to ask several times for coffee. Julie's offers some of the best breakfast food you can get in Oskaloosa. There pancakes are spectacular but I really enjoy their sausage patties, they don't taste like store bought premade patties.

They have excellent service, and one of my favorite things about this place. Is they are locally owned and not a chain store.

I travel for work a lot and finding locally owned and operated stores is becoming a thing of the past. So when I find a place like Julie's I can't say no.
