At first glance, The Outpost in Burney, California, might appear to be just a dive bar. But don’t let its unassuming exterior fool you; it serves one of the best steaks I’ve had in a long time. I ordered my steak medium rare, paired with loaded mashed potatoes, and it was cooked to perfection. The steak was juicy and flavorful, exactly how a medium-rare steak should be. The loaded mashed potatoes were a great complement, rich and satisfying. The dressing for the salad was a bit watery, as mentioned in other reviews, but it brought back fond memories of an Italian restaurant I used to visit with my dad when I was a kid, so I didn’t mind at all. The atmosphere at the bar was welcoming and enjoyable. I had the chance to chat with a few of the employees, who made me feel right at home. It’s always a pleasure to find a place where the staff is friendly and engaging. Overall, I highly recommend The Outpost to anyone in the Burney area. Whether you’re a local or just passing through, it’s worth stopping by for a phenomenal steak in a warm, inviting setting.

I ordered two chicken fried steak dinners, one with fully loaded mashed potatoes and one with a loaded baked potato they came with a side of veggies and choice of salad or soup my husband and I both got salad. You also got the choice of brown gravy which is delicious and white country gravy which we decided to try this time and it was amazing. My sons both got kids spaghetti and garlic bread. The portions were more then enough to fill up my 12 and 11 year old who eat like grown men. We also got a side of garlic butter shrimp and fries for my one year old. Every thing was cooked perfectly and hot still even after a 15 minute drive home. Fresh and full flavor! More than filling sized portions. The cook did absolutely amazing tonight!! One of the chicken friend steaks and the shrimp for attention

Honestly food is not amazing. The only thing we had that was good is the sizzling mushroom skillet, which is a pan fried mushroom in butter with garlic and onion. Other than that, we ordered their Prime Rib steak, chicken parmesan, fettuccine Alfredo. None of it is very good. The steak is over cooked, horrible seared on the outside. The Alfredo sauce seems to have some really mediocre cheese inside. The chicken param is actually okay ish, not amazing either. We got sat in a corner, not sure if this is related, but we do feel pretty neglected through out.

I waited an hour and forty minutes for my main course. I find that utterly unacceptable.

My friend and I arrived at the door at 8:10 pm on a Saturday night. Seating took about 15 minutes, which I guess is not unreasonable. I noticed that the restaurant was busy but not fully packed. All the service staff were running around but some clearly had other priorities like cleaning glasses than sitting down guests.

Then getting the menu took another 10 minutes or so. Then began the long wait. 25 minutes after ordering, some warm bread and melted butter arrived, along with the side salads. Then another 30 minutes passed until some very hot and tasty - I'll admit - wings were brought to our table. At this point it was 9:30 and we were famished. We asked the waitress when our main course was finally arriving. She was cheerful and optimistic and said the chef is cooking as fast as she could. She brought us more water. And more water. Finally after 1 hour 40 minutes our main courses - a grilled salmon and a ribeye steak were eventually served. A whooping 100 minutes between we entered and when we got our food. It was 10 pm at this point.

The food itself was not bad. It was on the pricier side but we were prepared for that. But the slowness of the service in general and the food in particular left a very bad taste in our mouth. I wouldn't recommend this to travelers who just want their hungry tummies filled before getting on...
