Hidden gem! Sophia's is set back from the Paradise main drag, Skyway, just enough that you could easily drive right by and never notice it. That would be HUGE mistake! Everyone in our five person group had something different and we all loved our dishes.
I love yellow curry and struggle to find places that make it the way I enjoy. The yellow curry with tofu was PHENOMENAL! It was just right in the heat department and off the charts in the flavor department. Even the steamed rice was flavorful by itself. I never knew rice could taste so good.
My wife enjoyed the fried rice with tofu. She said it was one of her favorite fried rice dishes. Good flavor and not oily. She would definitely come back.
Service was prompt; we were there at lunchtime during the work week. The gentleman who served us was nice and polite.
My only negative is this place isn't close to my home that is 8 hours away. Whenever we are back in Paradise or Chico, we will be stopping in! You should...
Read moreI generally approve of this place, but there was one aspect about it I absolutely needed to comment on:
I honestly can't tell if maybe it's just a different preparation style, but I suspect they hold onto the tofu for too long. It tastes sour the same way mine does when it starts to get close to the expiration date. I'm hesitant to complain because I personally haven't yet gotten sick from it and I in fact like the slightly pungent flavor, but because it seems most likely this is an accident, I still thought someone should tell them to keep a better eye on their ingredients before a customer is made ill.
PS, a lot of people on here are complaining about the service, and even as someone who likes this place I'll say that's a fair criticism. It's one of those "everyone's doing their best" small businesses where they're understaffed but very friendly and engaging. Again, I do recommend the restaurant... provided you don't have somewhere...
Read moreInteresting experience. We got to the restaurant early - we were meeting others there. I asked if I could see a menu so my husband and I could order an appetizer, and the owner told me no. He said I needed to wait for the rest of the party!! Because I was really hungry, I insisted and he reluctantly brought us a menu. I'm 73 and have never been told I can't order an appetizer because the entire party wasn't there! For dinner, I ordered the green curry with chicken. The vegetables were basically raw, and the curry flavor was very light. Everyone else seemed to enjoy their meal. I can't help but wonder if the owner was getting back at me for insisting on getting an appetizer? I won't go back...
