Asahi is one of those nondescript neighborhood restaurants in a residential area on a side street that you would have no idea it is there unless you were looking for it.
It does not look like much from the outside, or the inside for that matter. But, the quality of the food and sushi absolutely makes up what they may lack in ambiance.
My wife and I have easily spent thousands per month on seeking the best sushi and omakase here in the states with some meals costing over $700 and I say this with zero reservations that Asahi is on par with the finest sushi and Michelin rated restaurants in Manhattan.
They receive their fish from the same suppliers that supply the top Sushi spots in the city and their prices are beyond reasonable.
We eat here typically weekly.
Let’s start with the basics:
We usually start with either the miso or clear soup. Both are excellent choices with delicious and flavorful broths.
We skip appetizers and go for rolls and our own selection of individual pieces.
We always get at least two O-toro bluefin handrolls chopped with scallion.
They pack these rolls to the gills with the finest quality O-toro. These rolls are off the charts amazing!! I have yet found another sushi spot 5 star or less who makes a better O-toro negitoro handroll. We sometimes also get a negitoro roll as well plus a yellowtail scallion roll.
We then order a number of pieces:
Hamachi: some of the best, firm yet tender and what a wonderful flavor Artic Char: rare to find. Very fresh, similar to salmon Alaskan King Salmon: rare to find - excellent flavor Scallops: very sweet, very fresh, incredibly good Botan Ebi: they prepare these very well. Using outstanding sweet ebi Seared Salmon Belly: not many sushi restaurants have salmon belly. And most are terrible at preparing it. They serve the best and prepare it very well.
All pieces are cut generously.
The only thing they could use some work on is their sushi rice. But, for the most part it is fine. That is simply a minor critique to help the establishment continue with its dedicated pledge of providing the best overall experience.
Overall you will be hard pressed to find a better quality...
Read moreI ordered here almost weekly for a long while until I moved to San Diego. Mostly takeout or delivery, never dine-in. It's been ~6mo since I moved and I still miss this place. The sushi is always incredibly fresh and it's reasonably priced for the portions of fish you get. My favorite roll is the volcano roll, but they have many creative rolls that don't just depend on fillers like cucumber and cream cheese.
The bubble tea here is also really, really good. I haven't had a single bubble tea as good as this place since I have been out here. All of their flavors have been yummy, but my favorites are mango and strawberry. The boba always has the perfect texture--not slimy and not overly hard.
Aside from great food, I am sure that having solid customer service is another reason why they have survived covid despite being a relatively new restaurant. Staff is VERY friendly and accommodating. The owner and her daughter (I think) are always working hard and delivering customer service simultaneously. There were many, many times that the owner would deliver my food herself because the restaurant was so busy and the delivery person was taking too long. Super sweet.
I will be visiting when I am back in Jersey...
Read moreTL:DR - Wonderful folks, delicious food! So glad I took a chance on this local place! It was an hour before closing, but still quite busy. The staff warmly welcomed me into the restaurant, and offered me a seat, even though I was there to make a take-out order. The sushi is prepared fresh at the counter, which was interesting to watch while I waited for my food. Everyone at other tables looked really happy with their food and drinks.
Although my goal was to try the pork ramen, the duck rolls sounded too good to pass up. Great choice! They are basically rolled-up duck meat, with delicious sauce drizzled on top, and something tasty I couldn't quite identify in the center. Would definitely order it again. The pork ramen was one of the best I've had so far in New Jersey. The eggs were properly cooked, and marinated. Though there were only two pieces of pork, they were tender, juicy, and melted in my mouth. The broth was absolutely a savory treat, and of the noodles were ... well they were noodles! Cooked well, not mushy or al dente. Really pleased with everything I got there, and the wonderful service. I am definitely going back, especially because I found out they have taiyaki, and...
