I've been eating at McDonald's since I was a kid. Hamburgers were 25¢ back then and there was no such thing as a Big Mac (in other words, the early 1960s). In all that time I've rarely had an especially bad experience. Because of the consistent quality of the food I can go anywhere in the Lower 48 and get pretty much the same meal. And that's more than I could say for other fast food businesses until pretty recently, when competitors began to adopt McDonald's assembly line process and were able to achieve a reliable institutional ethos.
That's not to say McDonald's menu offerings are exceptionally good. They aren't. The McRib remains an unholy marriage of pressed meat and BBQ sauce, chewy, but with no real texture, palatable, but barely so. Yet it remains a favorite when it's on the menu.
The chicken sandwiches are generally flavorful and provide a satisfying meal. The Big Mac is also almost always good. The Biggest McFail is that the all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions, etc. may be within throwing distance of one another, but they are often anywhere within the box except on the bun. A Big Mac poorly assembled is not so much a several decker burger as it is an exercise in frustration. It's a challenge to reassemble the sandwich without wearing the special sauce.
The place was not very busy when I stopped in around 6:30PM. Nevertheless it took 15 minutes from the time I stepped up to the counter to the time I picked up my meal.
It's not hard to understand the reason: the entire service team is rushing around taking, filling, and carrying meals out to waiting vehicles in the "park and pick up" section. So there was one person at the counter, and 5 or 6 others assembling all the orders.
This would have been tolerable (if barely so) except for the cacophony of bells, buzzes, beeps and blasts that presumably notify the crew that something either requires attention or is ready to bag. It was ridiculously loud and harsh, and seemed to be completely ignored by the workers. Once the alarms started there was not a moment of quiet again in the 30 minutes I sat to eat my food.
Briefly, the drinks and condiments area was a mess, with the ketchup spilled or caked on the dispensers. I opted to get packets from the counter, but every one I saw had ketchup smeared all over.
The most disturbing thing of all was that every hand sanitizer station was empty, not very reassuring in light of the continued threat of Covid exposure.
As I said earlier, McDonald's strength is the fact that a Quarter-Pounder in San Diego is almost certainly the same as one made in Boston. But the management of the restaurant's customer contact points can definitely...
Read moreDecided to buy and pickup the family dinner at this location. After getting home and opening the bag we noticed two of our fries were put in the bag upside down. Opening my double Quarter Pounder with cheese I saw a mutilated burger patty (see picture) and noticed I was missing 1 of the 2 pieces of cheese on it. Also wife's drink should have been a diet coke but when she tasted it she realized it was a root beer. Also I don't understand how you fit all our food into one bag. Double Quarter Pounder with cheese, bacon quarter Pounder with cheese, chicken sandwich, 2 medium fries and a large fry along with napkins and 2 bb sauces. When waiting on my food after pulling forward the kid brought me the bag that was ripping from being so over stuffed and couldn't even close to keep food warm for the trip home.... Very...
Read moreThis was the WORST McDonald's I've ever experienced. We started our order at the drive through but the person working was screwing up the order so bad we told him we were coming inside. We went inside and the counter person (when they finally came to the counter) walked away after the people in front of us walked away. We then got the same young man who we were dealing with at the drive through. He couldn't find half of the items in the screen we were ordering and ONCE AGAIN was screwing up the order. I then asked for a manager to finished our order. The female manager took our order but wasn't very friendly. When we finally got our order (17 minutes later), it was not correct. They had forgotten half of the order. Needless to say I will not be back to...
