I visited around 2pm today. Because of COVID, it's not walk-in anymore, you order through a little window. The menu is posted on the windows though. There are signs advising you to order by phone but I had no trouble ordering in person. Customer service was quick because the line was growing but I didn't feel that the woman taking my order was rude at all, just trying to keep things moving for her busy business. The wait was quick; I went to a nearby corner store after I placed my order and when I returned, my order was ready for pickup. I ordered a large bbq fried chicken platter with mac and cheese, cabbage, and rice and beans. She asked me if I wanted rice and gravy, I said yes even though I had no idea what that was and because I already ordered rice and beans. I didn't see anything in my platter that looked like more than just the regular rice and beans I ordered but I was charged $2 more ($15 in total) so I don't really know what that was about. The platter was so heavy as I walked home and I'll definitely have lunch for tomorrow. The chicken was great and I got like 5 big pieces but the mac and cheese was overcooked and, like another reviewer noted, the cabbage tasted like cole slaw without the mayo. The rice was a bit spicy but I'm kind of a wimp when it come to that. All in all, I was happy with what I received and I plan on returning to try more of the side items and...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreThe place isn't the cleanest, paint chipping from wood over the food. Food is surrounded by plastic as well. The area where the food is kept and served is way too small for how many people stand back there. Employees were all handling money and food without washing their hands in between and for some reason, kept walking from behind the counter and not washing their hands when returning. I actually didn't see anyone wash their hands AT ALL while I was there & they take longer than you would expect to serve the food when the food is already cooked. Didn't have items they promote such as jerk chicken and oxtails, even on a Saturday night, which is one of the only nights they're supposed to sell them. They don't answer their phones so you can inquire about what is available before you waste your time to go there. The women serving the food don't wear gloves or hair nets, always seem to have an attitude and don't take orders that well. Most don't write your order down and will just give you whatever they thought they heard you say. I won't be going there anymore.
UPDATE: 2 days later & I am now sick with symptoms beginning the night I visited this...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreUsed to love the place but had already cut back a lot from going. Just started back a bit lately, but it sure looks like we will be cutting them off again. Seems to always be some sort of problem getting our order, and the prices keep changing, at least for us, from visit to visit. Today we got outright ripped off; the same "full pan" of rice we paid $40 for just a few short days ago cost us $80 today, and we were told the owner said to charge us that much. Neither the owner or manager were there at the time though to verify that, and that seems to be another problem: The staff acts out when they are unsupervised. We would have left the order there had it not been for our little one looking forward to it so, but we don't Iike how it made us feel. We used to get more from the menu, and swing past a lot more often but had to leave off altogether for a while due to similar issues before. Now, there is no longer a reason to come back, especially since there are several excellent recipes on line for the rice, and we were already down to that being the only thing on the menu left for us to get since we decided to...
