Normally places that attempt Japanese and Korean food on the same menu fail at both. This one excels at both, and then some.
I got miso soup, a sashimi sampler, Bibimbap, and a squid salad. Each item not only met expectations, but exceeded them. I'm from Los Angeles, so I know good Japanese and Korean food when I see it. (And taste it.)
Miso soups are oftentimes salty and dirty. You know what I mean? You tolerate the grit because it comes with the meal. But this miso soup was as good as the best ones I've had: clean taste, balanced, lively tofu cubes, and gone before I knew it.
The sashimi was great on its own, but the sushi chef at Hana went a step further: instead of putting the fish in the usual bed of shredded daikon radish, she put it on a bed of Wakame (seaweed salad). How inspired!
My main course, of course, was a hot-stone Bibimbap (aka Bibimbob). For those not familiar, it's a rice bowl in a hot stone bowl, with yummy things on it like Korean bulgogi beef, steamed onions and cabbage, shredded carrots, raw spinach, and a lightly fried egg. It came with kimchi and a wonderfully spicy red sauce to go with it. The dish was clean, well presented, and balanced. I've always wondered what the allure of Bibimbaps was. Now I know.
The squid salad came last. After all the above, it sure had a reputation to uphold. And boy, did it deliver. It was simply sublime. BBQ'd squid slices over sweetly pickled daikon, carrot, cloud ear mushroom strips, chili pepper bits, white sesame seeds, and who knows what else. What could go wrong?
I wish I weren't leaving town tomorrow, I would have put it in my regular rotation. Locals and visitors, stop by and have something wonderful...
Read moreWe came on a bad night I believe. Much confusion over our order. 2.5hr wait that turned into more confusion.... our sushi chef fixed my Nigiri order. Then proceeded to fix the rest of our orders. We decided after our wait it best to go home. He is the only reason I gave 1 star. He says hes been there 5 years since the restaurant received full star reviews.
My advice to the owner , the guy you're dating... find someone else or leave the dog at home. Hes an embarrassment to your establishment, he was passed out in the foyer , he was trashy with clientele and was acting a fool outside talking to my husband about personal details.
He proceeded to walk back in, didnt wash hands, and started to make food. Which appalled the both of us and I was grateful he hadn't prepared my sushi!!
My order was Teriyaki Chicken dinner. Nigiri yellowtail and salmon/cream cheese rolls.
My husbands order was crab rangoon appetizer with a pork loin dinner . Noted right away he has an onion allergy. Food was brought with onions. Taken back. At which time (been here 2.5hr) also noticed, my main course had never been started?
I recieved sushi. Not what I ordered, I was charged for sushi that I didnt want (8.95 vs nigiri 2.95) each order (x2). So essentially 12$ more. My husband recieved gyoza, although not bad, not what he ordered. He was not charged for appetizer. Attached is photo of my dinner I'm now at home eating. Flavor is great. I'm happy and filling up choosing instead to try to be appreciative we even got our orders...
Read moreWe have been going to Hana for years and years, not sure what happened to this place, but it is very apparent that it has undergone some bad changes. They changed their menu, we would always get the Hana Sampler and it always had the Spring Roll with it, now it does not after several years of always having it, such a bummer. Not much change on the price for the Hana Sampler though, and in my opinion the Spring Roll was the best part of the sampler. You also used to be able to pick what sides you wanted with your Bento Box for lunch, but not anymore which is also a bummer especially for my husband who liked the sushi instead of the rice for the side. My chicken was slightly burnt when it came out (and it never has been) and was also flavorless when usually it has lots of sweet and spicy sauce on it, and it had very little sauce or flavor on it, and was very dry. Also, the Aloha Chicken used to be served on a bed of lettuce and onion for a nice balance, it is no longer served with that either. This used to be one of our favorite places to go for lunch, but with all of the menu & food changes I’m not sure we will be coming back much. The sushi was very good and usually (in the past) all of the food was good, but not so much anymore. I wish they would consider changing back their menu & food to the original way that it was for years and years, it was so...
