TLDR: Fern cake awesome, bru good, caramel slice weird and not anything like the stuff in Scotland, mosta the cans, sweets and Lucozade well past best by and way too expensive due to that, just buy them elsewhere. Bakery section worth the visit though. Rolls were weird shaped, small but otherwise nice, square sausage an over peppered weird textured but vaguely right abomination (also frozen), bacon kinda flavourless but it’s close enough to pass for cheap stuff from the co-op back home (again, frozen), did I mention the fern cake was awesome? Really, really good fern cake makes up for all the rest.
Overall the shop section is way overpriced and a lot of the things for sale are months past their best by. At least 4 months on some drinks and other products. Yes, it’s a best by date not an expiry so it’s mostly safe to eat, but it does change the quality over time and was a disappointment to see. Fresh Lucozade vs 4ish months past due Lucozade are whole different breeds. Same for Vimto and Rubicon. Twice a year imports, as mentioned in other reviews, shouldn’t result in aged old products for sale, especially ones that are so, so marked up in price. The selection of candy was okay, the tunnocks I purchased tasted off and was very close to its best by, which is, for the price, a disappointment as I said.
Onto the bakery! Out of what I bought the only really great thing was the fern cake. Honestly, I’ll be back to buy many more of those. It was a little taste of home and I look forward to going to pick up more and trying some of the other wee cakes they have for sale.
Their millionaires shortbread was the weirdest mash up of odd. More of a vague interpretation of the real thing as described by someone who’s friend once saw someone eat a slice. The shortbread was soft and kinda flavourless, the caramel was a weird texture and the chocolate was squishy and tasted like sugar more than anything else. I tried it directly out the shop too, didn’t sit around in a bag or have a chance to be f-d up by anything I did. It was just weird, not bad, but not like anything I’ve ever seen or eaten in Scotland.
Bru was bru, wasn’t over shaken, had bubbles. Tasted like bru. Good bru, expensive, but good.
Square sausage was very weird. It sorta tasted like it should, but texture was a little off and any flavour was lost to the intensity of the pepper content. Feel like someone dropped a bit too much in the mix. Won’t be buying it again, but worth a one off. The bacon tasted like the really cheap stuff ya get when broke from the co-op, kinda flavourless but it was the right cut and a nice enough reminder of home. Very expensive though, as with everything else.
End of the day the imported products are a novelty best bought online for better prices, the bakery is expensive for what it is, but it's the only place to get that stuff and it's a good enough reminder of Scotland that I absolutely would recommend a visit and supporting a small business by paying a bit too much for something that's not easy to find is...
Read moreThe manager, who we learned is the owner's husband, was so rude...from the second I called to pick up my food to the moment he threw my food in my backseat. They just lost a 30 yr customer. The food has become overpriced and absolutely not worth it!!
I'm sorry you feel that walking around in a parking lot is a threat to your health. Maybe you should consider more vibrant, respectful, and healthy employees to interact with your customers. The way you treated me was unnecessary and uncalled for. The only context needed is the complete lack of respectful service during 2 phone calls and a simple curbside pick up. Your customers are in no way obligated to wear masks outside in their car.
You must have your customers mixed up, I placed my order online. When I arrived and called, you were upset and rude bc I parked in the wrong spot and made sure to tell me three separate times. Sadly, you missed the entire point, your lack of customer service. Regardless of your views (and let's not forget you brought politics into the conversation with my husband) any reasonable merchant doesn't speak to or treat people the way you did....
Read moreMy first order - Scotch pies - *. Authentic texture and flavor. The original Scottish recipe uses lamb of course, but lamb in Scotland and USA is very different.
Beef bangers - ** ok. Very fatty, so shrink a whole lot when frying (even on low). Lacks spices. Maybe needs more rusk/breadcrumbs to retain the OG moisture and juiciness.
Shortbread (ginger)
Black pudding: -** I guess they use the same sausage casings as their “bangers”. Not Scottish style - big lumps of fat in it, so more like Lancashire style but being so skinny, it’s dry and sparse. Have they even heard of Stornaway black pudding (or blood sausage as said here)? Have they ever tasted authentic Irish black pudding which is close to the proper Scottish style.
I also have their haggis in my freezer but not expecting much, sadly.
I was excited to find a Scottish style bakery/butchers in MI but I’m probably not ordering...
