I had a very upsetting experience today that I’m still upset about hours later. The man at the register (likely the owner) ran over to yell at me (yes, really he yelled) because I used the wrong milk for my coffee. I told him I was sorry - and he berated me and said I have to pay for the milk but then he says ‘next time it happens’ I’d have to pay for it and he kept saying I should have asked him permission. I told him I made a mistake so I would pay for the milk (which I did) but he was so mad. It was a weird reaction and it was an upsetting experience as I felt like a child being berated. To my defense, there was a small cooler next to the coffee station that had just one gallon of whole milk and one quart of half and half in it. This was a different cooler than the one across the store that housed milk and eggs for sale. It was a mistake I think others could make- lots of bodegas keep their coffee milk in little coolers next to the coffee station. Frankly I’m thinking these were coffee milks but ones he uses to ‘refill’ the milks on a different counter that I didn’t see. New to the area, I was happy to try this place for quick coffee and lunch sandwiches but this first impression was a really...
Read moreWest Lane Deli, a worn down and lived in deli filled with great atmosphere and people. John, the owner - a extremely friendly and kind man who knows all his regulars by name and probably has hundreds of interesting conversations with customers a day - from each of which he will likely retain a few small details and tidbits of info. The two cooks / workers - two exquisitely hard working men who provide top quality food and service. Despite their lack of any English besides the essentials, they remember many of their regular customers and their favorite meals. And maybe most important, the food - tasty and affordable. Sometimes the owner will even give discounts or free small items to his regulars as a token of appreciation of sorts. Highly recommend making this spot one of your go-to’s if you are a regular visitor or resident...
Read moreWhat a great resource! This store has been around for decades. When you step inside, one look at the vintage wooden flooring will prove that to you. I'd not visited this place in over 10 years, but I was pretty hungry + my home is kinda far off. So, into the restaurant I went. It's quite obvious that this structure was designed to be strictly residential because it's got such a cozy feel to it.
I walked in and was greeted by the manager/proprietor. All I knew was that I needed something to eat. When I get like that I don't think clearly. After asking just a few cursory questions of me, he made me the perfect meal - tuna salad on Rye bread with lettuce + tomato. I got a packet of kettle cooked crisps + was back in my car in no time!
Pleasant people, yummy food + fair prices. What more can you ask if a...
