Came to Shaggy’s on the Rez with my mom. I have a gluten allergy, so I ordered the Shrimp Nachos since they’re clearly marked GS. As they brought them out and placed them on the table, I was informed that the chips had been fried in the same fryer as other fried foods making this appetizer not gluten free anymore.
The nice server brought out the manager to explain. He said that since they were busy (on Sunday around 6 PM), the kitchen had used what was supposed to be the dedicated GF fryer for other fried foods. That means this item is no longer gluten free, along with other GS appetizers that include the chips. But then he kept asking whether my allergy was “really bad or not that bad,” and said that some people he knows or other guests with GF allergies eat the chips and are fine. (In my case, it’s an immediate bloat within 30-45 minutes. Depending on the contamination, cramps can start right away or later. Every time, after a day or two, I also deal with poor mental health, an upset stomach, and other issues.)
Anyway, he kept saying I should be fine if it’s not that serious, but then spoke in circles about not eating that and instead trying other (limited) menu items. I told him I now have trust issues with the menu. They advertise GS items, which I would think has to be Department of Health approved but they don’t honor their own system with the dedicated fryer. Who knows what else isn’t being handled properly?
He continued saying he could make anything in the back GF since the chef was there, but again, I had no trust. If they couldn’t prepare my appetizer the way it’s supposed to be done, how could I trust them with anything else? Then he offered half off the stuffed flounder entrée (not even marked GS) and said they could make it GF. As I sat there paralyzed, not knowing what to do, he kept pushing me toward other entrées, eventually saying mine would be free. I just looked at my mom and said I’d like to leave. We didn’t eat the nachos, and we didn’t take any of the free or half-priced food.
So if you’re gluten free and skeptical about eating here, I highly recommend you speak with them clearly if you do choose to dine, but honestly, I...
Read moreWe made Labor Day reservations for 2:30 at Shaggy’s on the Rez, as we were traveling, but arrived a bit early at 2:05, expecting a busy holiday crowd. To our delight, despite the busy atmosphere, we were promptly seated at an outdoor table. It was a bit warm outside but we enjoyed the view of the reservoir. Our drink order was taken about ten minutes later, and the drinks arrived approximately another five minutes later.
For our meal, we ordered a variety of dishes to share and enjoy. The calamari appetizer was a highlight—crispy and flavorful, though it came with only one of the two sauces we expected. My wife chose the shrimp nachos, I went with the Shaggy’s Red Fish, our son had the kids’ hotdog with fruit, our daughter opted for the kids’ chicken strips with fruit, and our friends selected the chicken nachos and another Shaggy’s Red Fish.
The food was the star of the show! Every dish was packed with flavor, and the Shaggy’s Red Fish, in particular, was a standout—perfectly cooked and delicious - topped with shrimp & mushrooms in a sherry cream sauce and served with jasmine rice. The kids’ meals were also a hit, with fresh fruit adding a nice touch. The nachos, while good, didn’t arrive until about ten minutes after the other entrees, which is huge pet peeve.
Service, however, had a few hiccups. Our server seemed very distracted. He ask r if we needed boxes and were ready for our check before our entrees arrived. We then had to request drink refills three times before they were finally brought out.
Overall, Shaggy’s on the Rez delivered a fantastic meal that left us impressed with the quality and taste. With a few tweaks to the service, this visit could have...
Read moreI love Shaggys. The food and atmosphere is always great. Service is definitely a hit or miss. Today’s experience was definitely a miss.
The first server we had was Trisha. She was very nonchalant. Whenever we let her know we needed something she wouldn’t respond; she’d just walk away. Granted, we would eventually get what we’d asked for, but an “okay” “sure” or even a head nod would have been appreciated to let us know she heard us.
Then the second server was Lorelai. She was much nicer than Trisha and more attentive as well. However, one member of our party was mischarged. She was charged for another persons order; the tickets were basically switched. Anyway, when the error was brought to Lorelai’s attention, she had the gall to say “well just have the other lady cashapp you the difference. Problem solved.” No apology, no sympathy or anything. I’m sure there might not have been much lorelai could have done about the issue, but telling a customer to tell the other lady to cashapp her was definitely not the way to go.
Then when I paid in cash, Lorelai asked me if I wanted my change back. Absolutely I want my change. If I give it back to you as a tip, fine, but don’t ask if I want change. Just give it to me and let me decide what I want to do with it.
Food was great. Atmosphere was great, too. We were originally sat outside but the weather got bad. The staff was prepared to move us upstairs inside very quickly. I was thoroughly impressed by their...
