If I were to review Schatzi's Schnitzel Haus solely on their food's flavor and quantity, it would be 5-6 out of five stars. The food tasted amazing! But the service, environment, and incidentals also factor into the experience. That being said, I guess my rating would average out to 3 out of 5 stars.
When you walk in there is no direction. Wait to be seated? Seat yourself? Go to the bar area and tell them what you want?
My first experience was during the 2024 Fall Festival, so maybe they were really busy? But I went to the buffet area where it looked like someone else was supposed to scoop out the servings, but no one was there. 5-ish minutes later, one person came in from outside.
While they were outside, flies were landing on the food. If they couldn't control the flies from being inside, then they should have had someone at the serving station making sure no flies touched the food. Gross.
I asked how it worked and they explained that it was a la cart. I only wanted a taste of the sauerkraut, not a whole serving, but since it was ala cart, I was charged for a full menu item.
I ordered a beer, which only came bottled and was WARM.
Most restaurants serve cold ice water. After paying for my food and beer, I learned they only offered drinks (including water) from a paid cooler.
Utensils were packaged plastic forks/knives/spoons. There were no extra napkins, so to get some napkins, I had to get more plastic utensil packages for one thin napkin.
There is a lot they could improve upon, but the food (even though I had to keep swatting away the flies) was...
Read moreIf you like finding 'off the beaten path' places, this is the place for you!! WOW!! I personally love German food and when I can find a place that serves more than a grilled brat, it makes me super happy. Schatzi's won't disappoint. Food was great. The menu is however what the chef wants to make that day, but the food the night we went was amazing. Red pepper gravy was spot on. Everything down to the mustard seemed to be homemade from scratch. Don't skip the warm pretzels.
Interestingly, they serve it cafeteria style from their bar top, but it makes the experience feel like family and something you would expect from a small town atmosphere. Atmosphere was fun too. Lots of interesting things to check out.
Just as a heads up, I don't know if this place is open everyday or just when they run these specials. Their door says they are a catering company, not a restaurant. So you might check their facebook page before you go. If they are open though, it is worth the drive. I snapped a few pictures since the ones on Google Maps are clearly way...
Read moreBest authentic German Food that you can get in the Midwest!! When I heard the first time of Schatzi's Schnitzelhaus I was skeptical, but Chef Manfred never disappoints: awesome Schnitzel, Maultaschen, Spaetzle, Brezel and much more!! But it is not only the food, also the heartwarming atmosphere in a restaurant that looks like a German Bierstube and thanks to his lovely wife Shari and the Schatzi team who make you feel welcome. Nothing beats a Schnitzel with German beer and a smile! Looking soooooo forward to the next time and especially the...
