Petey's Summertime Seafood — Restaurant in Rye

staffs are rude. You’re not welcomed when you walk in waiting for table. My boyfriend and I approached the host stand and told them we were a party of 4. Young red head hostess (she looks like a teenage girl) showed up and said Hi- but didn't indicate she hosting- or say “how we can help you?” She’s probably just inexperienced. Confused -I told her we were a party of 4- she looked at us funny. And said everyone needed to be present now to get a table -which was fine. I told her the other 2 people were coming from the parking lot in a mater of a minute. They are elderly so they don’t walk fast. I was trying to secure a table for them.

I kid you not the redhead gave away OUR last table while I was waiting for my elderly family members to walk in through the door in a matter of seconds. She could not have waited 2 seconds for them. Even worst my family came in at the exact same time with another group who walked in front of them in a matter of a second (they did not have a reservation ). But that exact moment when my family walked in with the other party -the redhead gave away our last table WHILE the other party walked in. This was weird… at how fast she jumped at the exact moment to give away our table at the exact moment. At that exact moment our party was was all CLEARLY visibly there. I think she was either racist and did not want to seat us given couldn’t have waited LITERALLY TWO SECONDS for us to walk through that door. I told her- we were all already here - why did you give away our table- and with out an apology she suddenly said you we “you have to wait 5 minutes because nothing is available-and put up an argument with me playing dumb as if my family were not there. I told her we can agree to disagree who was actually here first and she gave me a restaurant pager telling now it’s going to be now 15 minutes. I was already fed up but was willing to wait - we were standing inside for about a minute and she rudely told us to Go wait outside -mind you it’s 20 degrees outside that day) I told her we are NOT waiting outside IN THE COLD and we left. My family been going to Petey’s for years we are never going back to this trashy low class establishment ever again. Atlantic grill treated us better. highly recommend dining at Atlantic grill if you’re looking for restaurant that isn’t run by an argumentative inexperienced...

i don’t normally write reviews, & i tend to leave establishments alone due to the understanding of how hard it is in the restaurant world. but oh my.. we experienced this establishment twice this summer & both times were less than favorable (to put it nicely).

we had different servers each time and ordered differing meals: both times, the servers were disgustingly rude and condescending, & the meals were lacking (if not identical ?).

the service: first time, i had asked to put in my child’s order when asked about appetizer's & was told ‘to wait your turn,’ in an extremely curt manner - i then had to wait for a while to even place our meal order, even though we didn’t place an appetizer order (was this retaliation for asking a simple question ?)? the second time, the server rolled her eyes as she told me ‘we don’t do that’ when i asked for parmesan truffle fries, even though it’s on the menu ? — those are only singular examples of horrific service. i also witnessed the waitresses arguing when i went to the hostess stand to pay after being told that i wasn’t allowed to loiter at our table with 2 toddlers who were having a meltdown, but i hadn’t paid yet.. which i was only ‘loitering’ because our waitress had disappeared ? not sure what the waitstaff was expecting me to do - sit at the table with crying toddlers while waiting for an MIA server, or go to the hostess stand, only to be dismissed & then witness them fighting ?

the food: my mother ordered the baked jumbo shrimp & it came in a concerningly familiar paper tray (reminiscent of a tv dinner), with 8 small shrimp. the second time she ordered shrimp scampi & it was the EXACT same dish. wish i had taken photos because it was comically embarrassing. the baked potato was also served with 1 small butter slab and a dollop of sour cream. on the second visit, my mother asked for more of each, only for the waitress to sneer ‘sure’ & then never show up again (see above).

as i said, we tried their establishment twice this summer, 2 months apart - thinking the first time was a fluke, only to be severely mistaken & ended up wasting 150$ on 2 entrees & 2 kids meals, without any alcohol, both times. overall, this restaurant is decent if want mediocre fried food with indigestion &...

Today, May 30, 2023 my wife and I returned to Petey's Seafood restaurant and once again I was very disappointed with the food. My wife, however was pleased with her box of scallops. Her getting the scallops provided an interesting comparison to the seafood I got for lunch.

I got the seafood platter with clams with the belly's, scollops, haddock and shrimp. As with the last time we were there, my seafood platter was very disappointing. The platter was filled with the smallest shrimp one can find, they lacked any flavor except for the breading. The haddock was not fresh but from frozen cutlets and cut into 1-2" strips; I am a born and bread guy from the North Shore and know my fresh seafood, especially fresh haddock, plus in a former life I was a chef trained at the Culinary Institute of America. The scollops were small and the clams, well, half of them did not have bellies which I asked for.

Now what was very interesting was my wife got her own box (with French fries) of fried scallops and they were huge, twice the size of the scollops that were on my fisherman's platter; interesting. Even my wife noticed it when I pointed it out to her.

While we were eating the woman two seats over from us at the bar was asked about her food by the bartender and she replied ok, then asked if the ownership of petey's changed but the bartender replied no. When questioned why she asked that, the woman said it just seemed that the quality of the food had changed. The bartender asked if she wanted to speak to the manager but she said no. When the bartender left I quickly told the woman that I felt the same because of the food I was having for lunch. We both agreed that Petey's quality of food has changed and for the worse.

Again, this is the second time in two tries at Petey's for me and I'm done with them for the following reasons: Previously frozen haddock, very small shrimp, smaller scallops than what was served my wife and fried clams with half the bellies on them.

All of this is not coincidence. And I paid $36 for the seafood platter and was very disappointed.
