I’ve been to Caballo Blanco a couple of times throughout the years as it is a staple locally owned Mexican restaurant in South Sac. The restaurant is decades old, but decently kept. Very eclectic atmosphere, almost like you’re in someone’s abuela’s house. There are plenty of tables for large parties, many booths, and an entire room to rent out for events. Parking is accessible from the lot around back.
This style of Mexican cuisine is admittedly not my favorite. I’m more of a fan of the light, fresh mariscos or coastal style. This is more of a traditional, saucy, cheesy, heavy type of food. The flavors are good, the food comes out hot and fast, and the portions are large. The soup that comes with most meals is delicious! It is sort of a kitchen sink soup with lots of vegetables, meat, noodles, and rice. Their salsa is delicious and full of flavor, on the spicier side. But the chips aren’t homemade anymore.
The best thing about this restaurant is the service! Our server was extremely attentive. She anticipated our needs, was highly communicative, and didn’t rush us through our dining experience.
Overall, this restaurant is definitely worth checking out!!! I appreciate what Caballo Blanco brings to the community and am sure that we...
Read moreThis restaurant lives on only through assistance of its once-respected name. Everything else, namely the food and service, have long since died. A few years ago (2021) my elderly father, a native Mexicano, asked me if they were still in business. I took him with me to check and we happily found it was. We decided to have an early dinner there and seated ourselves. We ordered. What came out of the kitchen to our table was so bad neither of us finished our plates. I had the chile relleno (blah!!) and my dad had enchiladas. I spoke to the waitress and coaxed the truth out of her. The chiles were made from canned chilies and were microwaved to warm them up. We stood up, paid and left. She made NO offer to reduce the bill, or better yet remove the plate from the bill. This was enough never to come back.
As for my dad’s meal, he described it as “just ok” and nothing near what the restaurant was known for 30-40 years ago.
The 524 Restaurant still has one location left on Northgate Blvd. I recommend going there if you want to support a longtime family owned Mexican restaurant...
Read moreOrdered a combo plate, camerones Al mojo de Ajo, and a wet tamale.
Combo plate - taco, meat was dry and mildly flavored - Chile relleno was ok - cheese enchilada was cold in the center and the cheese wasn't melted - all sauces were very tamatoey and flavorless.
Camerones Al mojo de Ajo - shrimp was overcooked to the consistency of rubber. The beans and rice were also not great - the beans were more of a paste consistently and didn't taste like much.
The server was kind enough to not charge us for the food, but did end the visit with a snide comment about not being able to comp our meals again because we hate half of our plates.
I ate 3 of 8 shrimps and a bit of beans and rice.
My partner ate his taco and a couple bites of the other items.
It also took her 25 minutes to come check on us after dropping off the order - they were not that busy and she had help I will not be returning.
The only positive I have is that the chips and salsa were pretty good. Even the margaritas we're made with low quality margarita mix.
