Saw the high reviews, good prices and thought we’d check it out. Should’ve looked at the dates on the reviews.. the majority were from years ago…. Not sure if they have new management, new cooks or I have new taste buds, but my experience was not 5 stars. For one they nickel and dime you for everything. We ordered a meal and the waitress bought the soups.. but no wonton noodles. I thought she forgot. So a few minutes later we asked another waiter if they had any and he he said yes, but it was extra…75 cents. I said that was fine. I’ve never been in a Chinese restaurant where noodles aren’t included with your soup. I take a closer look at the menu and there’s a charge for ALL the sauces and oils. From .25-1.00. The only thing they didn’t charge for was soy sauce and salt and pepper. Then again I didn’t see any salt and pepper on the tables… When we received our food, it was just ok.. nothing special. The fried rice was not fried but tinted with something yellow. Our rice was cold and we asked the waitress if we could microwave it. A few minutes later we received fresh, hot rice. My friend had some chicken left over and we put the cold rice in the to go container. When I went to pay, my friend came up and the cashier told her that since we took the cold rice with us, he was supposed to charge us for it. He wasn’t this time, but if it happened again he would. We didn’t ask for new rice, we said could you microwave it. My friend had to mix the cold rice with the hot meat because they were taking so long to come check on us and then to bring us the rice… so she only had one scoop left by the time we received it. If he was going to charge us $6 for that.. I would’ve turned around and put it back on the plate. Don’t worry though, there won’t be a next time for us to...
Read moreMy wife and I found the online listing for China Sun while in separate parts of the house. The reviews we later agreed are what caught our attention.
It's definitely not your typical oriental restaurant. The decor is for sure as is the menu but the food was not. It was noticeably much better! The soups arrived quickly but the main dishes seemed to take quite a while. We were told a larger party had ordered and was keeping the cooks busy.
Later we realized why....all the food is fresh cooked. Not batch cooked, kept warm, and dispensed when ordered. Everything was that was supposed to be crunchy was very crunchy and warm.
We loved the atypical fried rice too. Most restaurants fried rice is brownish. This wasn't but was more buttery-colored and was very tasty. The egg rolls were almost twice the diameter of other Chinese restaurants!! And filled with great ingredients! The shrimp rangoon was just as good too.
My General Tso's beef was like none that I had ever had. Crispy, tangy, and not overly spicy!
We were concerned with how long it was taking to get our food but since we know it's fresh-cooked we were fine with the delay.
Another place to keep on our "to be...
Read moreAsk for the Indonesian Menu! We heard this place serves Indonesian food, so we drove from Austin to check it out. Driving up this spot didn't look so impressive. We considered turning around. So glad we didn't. The food is amazing! It's ostensibly a Chinese Restaurant, so you have to ask for the Indonesian Menu. But the word must be out because the place was half full at 2:30pm (way off peak) and you could hear bits of Indonesian language from each of the other tables. The kids had Satay Ayam (chicken skewers in peanut sauce). My wife had Soto Betwawi (coconut, beef soup with potato, tomato and lemongrass). I had Nasi Padang (it's all the good stuff- coconut curry beef, curry watercress soup, boiled fried and spiced eggs... too much to list). It was all 100% legit. The style is Kalimantan (Borneo), but you will easily recognize the dishes no matter what style your used to. If you're not already familiar with Indonesian food, you'll have a new favorite food. The spices are fragrant and the flavors pop. This is the best Indonesian food we have had in America, and we've been to dozens of Indonesian restaurants from...
