Oliver’s Twist One day an email that I never would have expected showed up in my gmail inbox. It was an invitation to go out for a drink with an old girlfriend. She had moved to another state and I had little hope of ever seeing her again. She suggested Oliver’s Twist since she had been there before and thought that it was a cozy quiet place. I said, “Yes!” We agreed on 7:30 on a Thursday. Far too far in the future for me to wait, but I knew the wait would be worth it. On Wednesday, I got a text saying that Thursday wouldn’t work and asking if we could move it to Friday. More waiting, but still worth it. I got there a little early. I like the Greenwood neighborhood and I figured I could walk around a bit to kill time before going in. When I passed the place, it was packed. I was glad that I came early. I went in to claim a table. It turns out that the place is bigger than it looks. I had my choice of tables. I passed on the high top since my date didn’t like having her feet dangling off a chair. No problem, there was a cozy little two top in the back. The only problem was that the speakers for the sound system were in the back and turned up loud enough to be heard at the tables outside. So much for a quiet place to talk. The staff was very nice about checking in on me, then leaving me alone to wait. I had a good view of the door, so I spotted her as soon as she came in. I got up and we shared a nice hug. Again the staff was very good. They gave us enough time to settle in before coming over to get our orders. I asked for a scotch and soda and she wanted a glass of chablis. My drink came back along with the news that they were out of chablis. The waitress listed a few similar options and my date picked the rosé. We had a nice time ta;ling about what we had been up to since we split up. There were also plenty of great memories to reminisce about. Staff stopped by from time to time to check on us. They were great about being available, but not pushy. A fellow made the rounds to light the candles on the tables. He lit a candle at the next table, then swapped it out with our unlit one. That got us a lit candle without having to put our conversation on hold during the lighting. It sounds like a small thing, but I like it when a place has that kind of attention to detail. My date pronounced the candle, “Romantic.” We spent several happy hours there before noticing that the place was clearing out. We decided that we should do the same. We got the check, where there was a bit of a surprise. The prices were huge. For me, it was worth it, but I wouldn’t like paying that much for a regular drinks out night. With better prices and quieter music, this place would be a regular spot for me. As is, I’ll enjoy the memory as...
Read moreI really wanted to like this place but I left a bit disappointed. I’ve walked by many times and always wondered what’s the experience like, as from the outside, it looked appealing so we decided to go in on a whim. The service was generally good although a bit slow, even for a not-so-busy Thursday evening. The cocktails were decent, not too sweet and ample flavor to start the evening. However, the food, perhaps it’s what we ordered fell far short of expectations. We ordered the steak with jaew bong, crab buttered noodles and pork rolls. The crispy pork rolls were good but admittedly, it’s hard to mess up rolls and I won’t go to a place just for crispy rolls. The steak and noodles just weren’t it. The steak was tender, and not over cooked, but the dish and combination of flavor just did not evoke any sense of desire to try again. It was cold, and I don’t recall the veges being steamed, and it honestly felt more like a steak salad than anything, and I’m not a fan of steak salads so maybe how the menu is written and what came did not connect for me. The noodles were okay, nothing to phone home about. It was buttery as expected with Parmesan but I should’ve ordered the chicken instead.
I genuinely want to see places like these in phinney ridge thrive. But the value for money just wasn’t there. I’m not sure what the concept is but there’s work to be done, irrespective of the location. On a very slow Thursday I saw a few tables near us just waiting and looking for a server to order. If it were a busy evening, I could only imagine customers...
Read moreI've been vaccinated, but I don't discriminate on those who haven't been. Hard 👎. Your a restraunt owner not an epidemiologist. Stick to what you were trained to know. At the hospital, we have immunocompromised staff, they don't get to pick and choose what patients we serve. We treat all equally. Covid is not the only infectious disease. There is known tuberculosis in our community, yet you're not asking for proof of a TB test? Tdap? MMR? HPV? These are all infectious diseases and yet you will serve people who havent been vaccinated against them? People that are vaccinated can still get covid and transmit it. By placing your staff in the front of the house, you, my friend, are placing them at risk. Not me. I would never wish for anyone to be homeless. That is a colorful imagination you have. That your staff is only capable to work at your establishment or they would be homeless? By Denying paying customers you are reducing youre employees income. Thats a faster way to make them homeless. I updated my review to 2 stars as you've corrected me as my original post stated your vaccine requirement was a political stance, but the k-12 comment made me deduct one for the "big fuss" about my grammar and spelling that shows a lack of empathy for those who may have may have dyslexia or other learning...
