We had taken our service dog into this restaurant in the past and they were more than happy to abide by the law but tonight, two employees broke Oregon law by refusing service now they are up for civil liability. One other thing, I wonder if the cook that did not have on a hair net or the lady serving that had long hair realize how much hair flies off of their head in one day or how many skin cells are lost and floating around their restaurant? One dog in a lap carrier zipped up will not do any more than one person. It was a ridiculous statement. She basically backed us out of the restaurant and bullied us out
đ Federal Law (ADA Title II & III)
Under the Americans with Disabilities Act, service dogs are allowed anywhere members of the public can goâthat means restaurants, airplanes (via Air Carrier Access Act), hotels, mallsâyou name it. The only permitted staff questions (when it's not obvious the dog is trained) are:
âIs it a service dog required because of a disability?â
âWhat work or task has it been trained to perform?â
They absolutely cannot ask about your disability, demand documentation, registration, or make the dog âproveâ its skills (yes, even if youâre feeling generous with the frisbee tricks) Tasks? They include things like alerting you to seizuresâa totally legit seizure dogâand many other disabilityârelated tasks .
đž Oregon Law ORSâŻ659A.143 (Almost WordâforâWord ADA)
Oregonâs state law mirrors the ADA almost exactly. Places of public accommodation (restaurants, hotels, transit, etc.) may only ask those same two questions when itâs not obvious what the dog does:
Is the animal required because of a disability?
What work or task has it been trained to perform?
No demands for paperwork or demos. And no fees for letting your federally protected seizure dog tag along .
đ¨ Where Service Dogs Go (and People Canât Snooze)
Restaurants, hotels, shops, theaters: Full access guaranteed. No surprise attempts to exclude your seizure dog, so keep an eye out for eyeârollers.
Airplanes: Covered by separate Air Carrier Access Act rules, but with the same two permitted questionsâbasically federal law, but with extra seatâbelt nonsense.
Public transit and government buildings: Covered under ADA Title II and Oregonâs own rules.
Canât charge extra: No âcleaning feeâ because your dog sheds a bit.
đ Quick Fact Sheet
Is it a service dog ârequired because of a disabilityâ? âYep. Seizureâalert dog, not your average Bark Ranger.â What work/task is the dog trained to perform? âAlerts me to seizure activity. Not just cute fetch tricks.â
They cannot ask anything else. If they doâtell âem to reread ORSâŻ659A.143 or risk a complaint or lawsuit (and maybe some IRS Audible credits for therapy).
In short: Oregon wonât let your dogâor youâget hassled beyond two simple questions. And whether it's flying cross-country or dining at a Portland food cart pod, seizure dogs are in. No paperwork, no interrogation, no extra bills.
Oregon bureau of Labor and Federal ADA complaint tomorrow. Learn the law. And you could have been much nicer in the way you spoke to us. You were rude...
Read moreI took my dogs to a groomer in Shady Cove today and decided to have lunch while I waited for one of them. After reading the reviews I decided to order take-out from Pizza at The Cove. I still had one of my dogs in the car so I didnât want to eat inside and leave her alone. I called in my take-out order for a mini Rafterâs Special and asked if they could substitute the red onions with sausage. They said yes. I also ordered a single trip to the salad bar and a large Diet Pepsi. My order was ready on time. The young girl that helped me was kind though quiet and reserved. I had asked for an extra salad dressing container and filled them both with Ranch. When walking from the salad bar back to the register I accidentally dropped one of them, the lid popped off and Ranch splattered everywhere! I was so embarrassed and irritated with myself. I apologized profusely for making a mess. The girl kindly said sheâd clean it up. I still feel horrible about it. The pizza was yummy. I have to give many kudos to them for their wonderful salad bar. It was immaculate with not a single piece of lettuce or topping outside of itâs container. Everything was chilled, the lettuce (I canât remember if it was green leaf or romaine but definitely wasnât iceberg like so many other salad bars have (and usually bagged not fresh) was bright green, very clean, slightly damp (perfect), crisp, chopped perfectly for easy eating and clearly very fresh. They had cottage cheese and all the other toppings I enjoy. Except it could maybe include jalapenos đ. My lunch definitely hit the spot! I will definitely eat here again. Next time Iâll probably have the all you can eat salad bar and try the small potato wedges. I read that theyâre addictive. Itâs sooo refreshing to see a restaurant, especially a pizza place, that still has a salad bar. Abbyâs has closed theirs permanently due to fear of Covid related lawsuits (ridiculous đ). Sizzlerâs in Grants Pass also continues to have a salad bar and a great one also. Thank you for not changing or caving to unreasonable pressures. Thank you for a great lunch and for your kindness. Today was my first visit and I look forward to many more. Keep up the good work and may your...
Read moreMy husband and I spent a full day at Crater Lake and were starving. We tried calling Pizza at the Cove, the line said it was busy. Thatâs fine, I guess, but our ETA was 8:30 (30 minutes before close) so we decided weâd just order in person. We pull up. Open sign is on, the door sign says open, there are people inside⌠we walk in and the lady at the front gives us a look and says, âWeâre closed,â like WE were the ones who were confused. My apologies maâam, considering online says you close at 9 and you had open signs everywhere, we were left with the (apparently false??) impression that yaâll were open. Just a PSA to businesses: if youâre going to stop serving food at a certain time, adjust your hours to reflect when youâre ACTUALLY serving food. If you donât want to do that, at a MINIMUM turn your open sign off so people who go out of their way donât have to go in and be snarked at by your staff. Since you have no way of knowing when this business is actually open, itâs probably in your best interest to not bother...
