I recently ordered a gluten free cake from A Sweet Morsel for my birthday. I was delighted that this bakery offered gluten free, custom decorated cakes at a very reasonable price point. Not many places in Pittsburgh do!
TLDR: the few design elements I wanted were poorly executed, and the cake itself was rubbery and did not taste good. The customer service I received through the ordering process was (mostly) good.
The ordering process: I sent the bakery an email with my desired design- a single tier cake with black frosting and decorated with sage green leaves/vines and dark red roses placed sporadically an the top and sides of the cake. I also requested “XXV” be written on top of the cake in gold frosting in a small font (about 0.75” tall). Casey promptly called me back to discuss options that would make this possible. Chocolate frosting could be dyed black, they could do the vines, but the roses would probably fall off due to the consistency of the frosting this bakery uses. Additionally, they did not have any way to make the golden frosting, and it would have to be yellow. I really appreciated Casey’s transparency with what was achievable, though I was a little disappointed by the limitations of this bakery since they do so many custom cakes. Regardless, I was able to easily place my order on their website after consulting with Casey, who offered to take the order over the phone as well.
Scheduling Pickup: I had originally scheduled the pickup for 2 PM. The morning of pickup, I called them and asked if, by any chance, the cake could be ready at noon, if not, it would be no big deal and 2 would be fine since that was what was originally agreed upon and it was late notice. They said it could be ready a bit after noon, so I really appreciated their flexibility on the matter. A few minutes later, they called me to say that they had forgotten to bake half my cake, and that it would be ready at 2. This was a little disappointing, but hey, at least I was getting a very fresh cake!
The pickup: I had a family member pick up the cake so I can’t comment on this.
The decorations: I was very disappointed with the look of the cake. The green leaves were more of a mint color rather than dark green, and the writing in yellow on top was much larger than I requested. I was able to add the fresh roses and gold luster dust to fix it up, but with so few elements, I was disappointed with the look.
The taste of the cake: if all of this had happened but the cake was delicious, I would not be writing this review. Unfortunately, this was one of the worst gluten free cakes I’ve ever had. The chocolate frosting was nearly flavorless, there was hardly any of the raspberry filling in it at all, and the cake itself was rubbery and tasteless. If you would have told me the cake was stale, I would have believed you. Considering that (at least half of) this cake was freshly made just hours before, this is likely attributed to a poor recipe and/or incorrect baking times.
While I can’t attest to the quality of their gluten-containing baked goods, I would not recommend a gluten free cake from...
Read moreI’ve never written a review for something before but feel very strongly that my experience with this company could have gone much differently so I’d like to share. I recently reached out and asked a sweet morsel to do cookies for me for my moms 60th birthday. I attached the picture below and noted it was a wine theme. They reached out to me and stated they couldn’t do the metallic rose gold. I told them that was fine, to please replace it with blush and specified that I didn’t want baby pink, but blush. They confirmed that was fine. Below is the side by side of the picture I sent them, versus what I received. When I said I was unhappy with the colors they told me the orange color is a “non-metallic rose gold” and that my note of “blush” never made it into their system. (Even though They confirmed the color 4 days prior to pickup). Unfortunately these cookies completely clashed with my color scheme and I was very unhappy with them. They told me it was a miscommunication but would not fix it or even offer me a partial refund on the order because my sister picked them up, not knowing they weren’t correct. I contacted them with 10 minutes of pick up but did not hear back from them until a day or two later. Personally, I think when you’re paying $66 PER DOZEN for cookies, they should be sure the cookies are exactly what the customer wants. I totally understand it takes a lot of time and effort to make these types of cookies and I appreciate that and am willing to spend the money—- but not when you receive something that is so far off from what is requested. They did offer me a discount on a future order but unfortunately I wouldn’t trust them again to do anything for me and I wouldn’t recommend using...
Read moreShannon from The Perfect Pastry did 100 dozen cookies for our wedding, and they were absolutely spectacular! We've had cookies from TPP many times on several other occasions and felt good about choosing them, but we didn't expect the wedding cookies to be as fantastic as they were. We received tons of comments about how delicious they tasted and we didn't have many left once the night ended because everyone packed the take-home boxes to the brim.
Shannon was very professional, accommodating, and communicative. We wanted to make sure we could get our cookies to the venue's refrigerators before our wedding day, but we weren't sure when to come get them. Shannon was very easy to contact and kept us updated on what stage our order was in. She also trayed the cookies beautifully.
There's a lot to pick from at The Perfect Pastry. We were debating on getting decorated cut-outs to match our peacock-themed wedding, but we couldn't pass on the other selections. Their peanut butter blossoms, ladylocks, thumbprints, and buckeyes are among my favorites, but their linzer cookies are to die for!! They're so buttery and flavorful, and I ate way too many than what is probably healthy for one person.
I also recommend walking in to get some cookies. They have a great selection on site, but at least do not walk out of there without a container of buckeyes. My favorite used to come from Cracker Barrel, but The Perfect Pastry...
