2022 update: again staying 4 star, we ate there 3 times this year and consistency was again a problem. Rubins still amazing, better consistency on meat, fries were cooked poorly one of the days, limp, and greasy as though oil was to cold when dropped fries in. 2021:Great food and pies! I will start with saying I ate there 2 times on my trip. Both experiences were not created equal, hence the 4 star. 1st time there 5 star all the way. We had spent the am at the falls went there for late lunch. Ordered the rubin and brisket nachos and kids pizza and kids grill cheese. All were great! But the grill cheese did not hit my 8 yearold taste but he still ate it. The pizza was good, but the pepperchini in the middle was a bad idea on a kids pizza for I had to take a bite out of each slice to get rid of the taste of the pepper. The rubin was by far one of the best I have had, I eat them a lot, I make them a lot and have my own variations to that just makes it great. Theirs lands right at the top of my favorites. the cornbeef was perfect and tender, melts in your mouth, the kraut was amazing, nothing beats house made kraut, and the bread, was my hesitancy but the cranberry wild rice bread, oh man, it made it brought it to another level. The house made thousand again, just elevated the sandwich. It was about the perfect rubin. Here I will say is where I knocked 1/2 star off, went back for dinner 2 days later, got there and seated close to closing time and our party got 3 rubins and all were lacking meat. The one half of my sandwich was sparce I think maybe like one bite had meat rest was kraut and cheese. Out of 3 all were low on meat. But still amazing, maybe aim for getting there 5ish. The nachos again amazing, the meat was tender hint of sweet, our toppings loaded on and plate for lunch was massive. Here is where the other half star comes off, the dinner variant was literally half the size and toppings were on the side so fraction of the meat, and toppings and about 30% less chips. They are amazing but the inconsistencies in portion sizes are disappointing. I think little more action to detail there would go a long way. The onion rings are great, worth trying, were little greasy but good, the batter was light and crispy, nice bite. They were worth a try. French fries are again really good my 8 year old ate all that were left on others plates before we left. The fish taco was sadly battered which made it heavy. I think pan seared would make it a lot better to give it a more light feel that fish tacos are good for. Otherwise good flavor but nothing to write home about. The hot beef was great, the portion was large, the potatoes were mediocre the meat was great. Maybe a little more freshness to the potato would help. Last is the pie, we got the peanutbutter cream and the lemon angel and the raspberry cream and a piece of carrot cake. The peanutbutter was amazing good thickness, the peanutbutter creamwas light and delicious the chocolate ganache was a great balance the chocolate crust was nice compliment. It was yummy. The raspberry and lemon cream were both really good on their own. Solid consistency the sour of the fruit to cut the sweetness was great. The meringue crust was unique and so good. The lemon angel is semisweet not overly, not a lemon meringue sourness, but a delightful blend. We Got an entire pie in 2022 and family favorite. The raspberry cream is so light and delicious. The tartness of the raspberry creame with the right blend of sweetness. We enjoyed both these pies a lot. 2022 tried french apple as well, and it had large apple slices, great crunchy top. It was made with fresh apples, can tell based on consistency and firmness of the apple. It was great. Nothing tasted canned on it. Now the perfect bite, the lemon and the raspberry cream combined wow, now the combo should become a regular item. Soooooo good, like I was so full but could not stop eating them both together. If u like those flavors get both and eat with both on your fork you will not regret it. Great place! Will be back next time we...
Read moreBe prepared for a novel of a review 😂 My husband and I loved this place! ❤️ This was our favorite restaurant we ate at during our stay on the north shore, including restaurants we went to in Duluth. The restaurant has a wonderful atmosphere and it felt like a very romantic place to go to with my husband. There were groups with kids there so it is family friendly as well. *Unfortunately, I do need to include our wait time in this review. We arrived on a Friday night around 6pm with no reservation and we were seated right away, but our food wasn't served for another hour at least. Luckily we ordered an appetizer that came to the table quickly because we were so hungry after a full day of travel! I will say, I can tell that it was a very unusual occurrence for this to happen. Do not expect to normally wait that long. **Here's the part I hope you pay attention to the most -the wait was SO WORTH IT! The food was absolutely delicious! I ordered the shrimp scampi and my husband had the meatloaf. Wonderfully flavored, spiced, and cooked to perfection! 😍 The appetizer mentioned earlier was the onion rings. They were good, but nothing special until you dip them in the restaurant's home made ranch sauce! Do it, you won't regret it. I would take home a bottle of that deliciousness if it was an option (and if it was, I deeply regret not seizing the opportunity!). 😂 *The waitress was really nice and hospitable. She checked on us multiple times while we waited and checked with the kitchen to see what was going on. She even ended up giving us pie on the house as an apology for the wait time. We ended up taking our free pie to go and it was delicious! *Price: it is a little expensive, but we chose dishes off of the "Entres" list which is the expensive part of the menu. For us, again it was completely worth it. They have other menu options such as sandwiches, wraps, salads that were all cheaper options. Some groups we saw come in to just sit and have coffee and pie, which sounds like a wonderful time to me. *They have a gift shop there with a lot of cute and unique items. Overall, we highly recommend eating at Rustic Inn Cafe and we will definitely be back...
Read moreWe visited again July 2025 and have never been disappointed. Just like all of our past visits, the food and service are excellent. You can’t leave until you finished a pie of your choice. Our family personal favorite is the 5-layer chocolate pie. We purchased two whole pies on our recent visit heading back home.
our favorite restaurant and we were so happy to find out when we visited in May 2022 that the new owners have kept the same tasty menu.
This has become one of our favorite restaurants in Minnesota and for sure a stop on our way to/from the North Shore. It is less known and less busier than the nearby Betty's Pies, not to mention food is so much better. And the pies are so delicious made fresh daily. We have visited The Rustic Inn a few times and this recent visit was another incredible one even with COVID. They do a great job with distancing and cleaning protocols. The turkey sandwich with the most delicious cranberry bread and the meatloaf are our favorite meals. The five layer chocolate pie is our #1 favorite and they have so many good choices.
Our first post in 2018-
A visit to the North Shore is only complete with lunch or dinner at The Rustic Inn. We moved to Minnesota six years ago and the Rustic Inn has become our favorite restaurant and a regular stop when we visit the North Shore. Don't bother with some of the other pie/restaurant places nearby that are mostly for the tourists. Four years ago some of the locals in Two Harbors told us about this great find and now we make it part of our regular experience. We have visited during the summer and winter months- no matter the time of year they have excellent food, great service and the pies are the best! We always order pie with our meal and then take an entire pie home at each visit (usually the five...
