I liked this cafe, it is as the name suggests on a back street. You probably wouldn't find this restaurant if you were just passing through town on the main drag but it's only one block off of the main flow of traffic. It's worth going looking for it. The restaurant was very clean and had a nice homie feel, though the lighting was a little bit too dim I felt. We were greeted at the door and escorted to our table. It smelled really good as we entered. We came in a little after 1 pm and the lunch rush was just starting to slow down. There were 2 daily specials written on the chalkboard on the wall. Two pieces of catfish or King ranch chicken both offered with your choice of 2 sides from a list of 5 or 6. Both options came with the salad bar and bean bar. A waitress was there right away to get our order. I ordered the King Ranch chicken while my dining companion ordered the catfish. While we waited for our food I checked out the salad bar. The lettuce was clean and fresh although the pieces were cut rather large. There were about a dozen various fresh cut vegetables to go on your salad on the bar. There was also potato salad and coleslaw that appeared to be fresh made. Also there was about a half a dozen of the most common salad dressings. I got a salad with a few of my favorite vegetables and a helping of coleslaw. The coleslaw was very good, made with fresh ingredients and a dressing that was not too sweet and not too tart, delicious. The salad was also very good. Our entrees arrived just a few minutes after sitting down with our salads. The servings were large. I had with my King ranch chicken, green beans and roasted new potatoes. Everything appeared and tasted to be made from scratch. Everything was very good. My one complaint with my entree was that it seemed to be more King ranch than chicken. I would have liked to have seen a little more chicken in the entree. My companion said that the catfish, which was breaded in cornmeal, was a bit overdone and hard to eat in spots. He didn't finish his catfish. These lunch specials cost $9.99 each. Not too bad but not really cheap either for lunch. The food was good but did not completely meet our expectations. For the money I would have expected my friend to be able to eat all of his catfish and I would have liked to have seen a little more chicken in my entree. The sides were great, the salad bar was great and I'll admit I never made it over to the bean bar but it looked like there was some good stuff there. The atmosphere was nice and the staff was very polite and helpful. Over all it was a pleasant dining experience though it did not completely meet our expectations. I will be going back again to try some of the other specials and a few of the items off of the...
Read moreWhile my friend and I were in town, we decided to look for a local diner in the area. We found the Back Street Cafe. I had little expectations but when I saw the full parking lot and delicious smells wafted over as we walked in. The cashier said, "Take a seat...We have plenty of room." And she was not lying. it was a spacious dining area as if COVID did not phase them. The restaurant was extremely clean and organized to a T. After sitting at our table, a nice waitress took our drink order and informed us of the bean bar. Our meal came with free pinto beans and cornbread. I ate a bowl of beans as the waitress brought our drinks and we placed our order. Both my friend and I ordered the chicken fried steak. It sounded amazing and it came with two sides. I chose double mashed potatoes and my friend chose mashed and okra. I always said, you can judge a southern cooking restaurant by their chicken fried steak and sweet tea. They had no tea (machine was down) but I wasn't upset. The chicken fried steak and.mashed potatoes tasted amazing, fresh. Forget that frozen, pre-packaged stuff. Everything was made from scratch. It was clear to me that the chef makes everything with love. And it shows. Even though my friend and I were feeling stuffed, we liked the sound of.their desserts. I chose the brownie sundae (no cherries and nuts) and my friend had the blackberry cobbler. Both had ice cream on top and it was extremely decadent. My friend and I were in agreement that we would come back, if we were in town. I give this restaurant ten stars if I could. it was yummy and fresh food. Back Street Cafe you're great! Mmmm Mmmm Mmm! Read moreWe were seated promptly. After waiting 15 minutes we finally were approached by a waitress asking if we had placed an order yet. She said she had seen us waiting for a long time. She took our order for drinks and food. After waiting 20 more minutes for our food it arrived barely warm. My baked potato wasn't cooked completely and my steak was paper thin. Our waitress never came back to our table to ask how our food was or to refill my drink. We never got dinner rolls with our meal, but the 2 tables next to us did. After being stared at by the other waitress's I got the attention of my waitress and asked for my bill. Again, no one asked how our food was. I paid and got up to leave when we saw the cook come out of the kitchen with an extremely dirty apron. I left praying I wouldn't get the extra value meal in a few hours. I would not recommend this place to anyone. Go to Corpus Christi if you are in the mood for a steak dinner, don't waste...
