I have lived my entire life in Beaufort, SC and have never eaten at the Foolish Frog. Tonight, after an evening at Hunting Island, my soon to be fiancé and I tried the restaurant. After waiting 40 minutes, with open tables everywhere (inside and out), we finally had our seats outside looking over a very scenic and almost iconic view of the Lowcountry. We both had the Cajun Pasta, Coke, (1)Garlic Bread, Fried Green Tomatoes, and (1)Sweet Potato Fries.
Service was slower than I am used to. Although being from the “Slowcountry”, you’d think it would be normal. However, seating took 40 minutes. Our Coke-a-Cola drinks came 5-6 minutes later. When we placed our drink order, we asked for an appetizer. The Fried Green Tomatoes. Again, very slow service. It took 10-12 minutes to be served. (I’d like to mention that it wasn’t the servers fault for the food being late, I understand it is out of their control. Drinks, and seasonsing are not though. In fact, we waited for an additional 3-4 minutes for refills.) The appetizer was very delicious and I couldn’t have been more impressed with the presentation.
Following the appetizer, we both ordered our main dish, the Cajun Pasta, with one order of Sweet Potato Fries. The waitress asked in passing, “Would y’all like some garlic bread?”. Being said in passing, and the question asked as soon as we ordered our main dish, we thought, just like anyone else, the garlic bread was an addition to the meal free of cost… being bread and all. That was not the case. Despite the exuberant amount of time wasted on waiting for food, and drinks, the meal was overall exceptional. The price was not.
The price was outrageous. A total of $105.09 BEFORE a tip. FOR TWO PEOPLE. The breakdown is as follows: (1) Garlic Bread Basket (again Its bread, we were not expecting to be charged) $4.00 (1) Fried Green Tomatoes (we ordered this and knew the price) $12.00 (2) Cajun Pasta (they were decent, but not filled with flavor) $58.00 (2) Coke (This price upset me even though I have more things to be upset about) $7.00 (1) Sweet Potato Fries (Okay fries - served lukewarm) $4.00 (1) Desert (haven't tried it yet, but also didn’t know the price) $8.00
The most interesting bit in all of the adventure tonight, was the 4% CC service fee, which I did not see posted anywhere. That is completely obnoxious. It’s almost comical to a degree. You too can calculate the CC fee by dividing the CC fee amount by the (subtotal minus the CC fee) listed on the ticket. You should see 0.04 on the calculator which is 4%.
Unsurprisingly, a larger group beside us, 5-6 people, had drinks out faster, were more attended too, and food out quicker than we did. Unbelievable. Customers are customers and larger parties should not have better service.
It is not a miracle that the Foolish Frog is still in business. They constantly up charge, not inform customers of pricing, and neglect to mention the credit card fee. It was an unpleasant way to end the night.
The Grand Total with tip, $121.91 for TWO PEOPLE. That is approximately...
Read moreWhen you walk into the foolish frog it feels inviting with a nice view of the marsh lands and warm lighting to complement it. Seeing this i felt as though i picked a good placed to have a bite to eat and relax a bit i walked in and it was busy a good sign i thought. after a few minutes of being seated a waitress approached my table gave me a menu and informed me there would be a long wait time. I was okay with this being it was busy and i had time. I ordered a corona light and an appetizer, the FOOLISH fried frog legs. I enjoyed the view while i waited. i was getting bitten up a bit as to be expected with the outside seating but the view made it worth it. After waiting a while i was finally served the frog legs i ordered and upon grabbing them and the first bite i was immediately disappointed the breading just fell off and it was mushy and just barely warm. I ordered the fried flounder as well and once it came out it looked good. But this was also mushy and just barely warm as well as the fries served with it. the breading on the flounder was just a shell and my flounder just flopped out of it. So i ordered desert. a coconut key lime pie. It came out and appeared to have been sitting a while as the whipped cream was melted almost all the way down but the key lime pie was the only truly palatable thing i received that evening besides the corona light once i finished i was brought a check for $62 i put the appropriate funds on my card and proceeded to place my card in the check book to pay. after the waitress grabbed my card To my surprise a notification popped up on my phone for a $132 charge being declined she brought the card back and left as i sat there i watched her have a conversation with her coworkers about what she had just attempted. She then saw me still sitting there and comes back out to me and asked if i was okay i then popped the question about the $132 charge and she proceeds to tell me that she charged my card to the wrong table and that she cancelled it so it wouldnt have gone through anyway i then say thats ok its paid for now and thank you ill be going now. As i walk away she says your not gonna leave a tip and i replied absolutely not have a good night. And over my shoulder she leaves a snarky toned comment saying oh you have a real good night too this was the worst dinning experience ive had in a very long time and i would be foolish to return to this...
Read moreMy husband and I are new to the area and had heard about the Foolish Frog on Facebook. The experience started off pleasant enough. We had a nice seat outside and a great view. Our server started off as very nice, as well. We came in for a relaxing lunch on a Sunday afternoon. We ordered a calamari appetizer. It was fine, just a bit greasy. We ordered our entrees. I had shrimp and grits , and he had the fried shrimp basket. The shrimp and grits looked amazing--just the way I like it prepared. Unfortunately, it had little to no taste, and the shrimp were very overcooked, giving them that rubbery texture that was hard to eat. I tried cutting them in half to make them easier to chew, but this made little difference. My husband had a fried shrimp basket. Everything had obviously been cooked in old oil. The food was bitter, and the shrimp were a bit overcooked, as well. I tried one of his hushpuppies, and the bitterness from the oil was overwhelming.
We did not complain, but when the server asked if we wanted boxes to go, we politely declined. We asked for the check, which she delivered and said she'd take it when we were ready. We had our card ready, so I told her she could go ahead and take it now. She made a snide remark to the effect of, "Well, I guess y'all are ready to get out of here now." She later came back with the check and card and made another rude remark to the effect of, "Considering how much food I just carried back to the kitchen, I guess y'all won't be back anytime soon." I asked her to repeat herself, surprised that this was the second comment she had made about our not enjoying our meal, but she kept fast-talking over me. (My husband did not hear the comment. If he had, the tip we left would not have been so generous.)
In the future, it would be a good idea that if it was obvious customers were dissatisfied, ask what can be done better. Have a manager talk with us. Don't make passive-aggressive remarks as if we are at fault for not liking the food. It was sub-par at best, but we would have left without complaint if it had not been for the remarks of our server fast-talking her way through the sarcasm as if we wouldn't catch...
