We were happy to know we had a restaurant right across from our lodge that offered a lot of different choice for food and we ended up eating two lunches and two dinners here. Both lunches were amazing! The Walleye bites, blackened trout sandwich, chislic, corn cakes, and mac & cheese with grilled chicken were amazing. The desserts of the giant caramel roll and a monster piece of cheesecake were also super good. Of our four servers, Liam stuck out the most (great job by him!!).
The first dinner night my husband's trout almoundine was very good along with the dinner rolls. I had the buffalo stew in a bread bowl and while everything was cooked soft and tender, something in the stew was quite spicy and I was unable to enjoy most of it.
The next night my husband ordered the weekly pasta special - when we came in it stated it was spaghetti and meatballs on the board....what he got was a chicken carbonara type dish - he loves that dish also, so he didn't say anything since he figured maybe the board was wrong.
Mine was supposed to be chicken corn chowder (also on the board as the soup of the day) in a bread bowl. I asked about it being spicy and was told no, there shouldn't be anything spicy enough to notice. The soup that came out was not any kind of corn chowder - wasn't a kernel to be found (and if it was blended up, no taste of corn), and again, the sauce was way to spicy for me to enjoy. There were a few cubed pieces of chicken in a base sauce and nothing else.
The place is beautiful and all of the hostesses were amazing. We would definitely eat here again, as most of our choices were delicious and nice portion sizes and the majority of our servers did...
Read moreI really enjoyed this place! I was happy that there were a few vegetarian choices (though none vegan), and I tried to ignore the dead animals on the walls. :)
The room itself was beautiful, atmosphere nice. The service was slow, but I was still going to give it five stars anyway and just make mention that it's quite laid back. :) However, at the end, she told me that service is normally FAST, and she was really sorry, and she gave me free chocolate cake! She knew how to buy my love. :) However, it should tell you something, because I was still going to give them five stars, and would have even without free cake, despite slow service. I thought the slow service was well worth it.
I thought it was fun that there were paper tableclothes for us to draw on with crayons. Neat! (Wastes a lot of paper though.)
The food was FANTASTIC. It reminded me of a fancy restaurant. It felt like absolutely everything was made from scratch, in-house. To me, that is truly the mark of fine dining. All that said, the prices were REASONABLE, and the portions were good. The night before, I had ate at a fake fancy restaurant. The prices were twice as much, portions half the size, and I doubt any of it was made from scratch.
This place was the opposite. Wonderful food, which I had the impression was done in the old ways, as it had been done for 100 years, made from scratch, sensible prices, good portions. Really could not have been happier.
It's such a nice combination to find traditional food, yet with vegetarian options, made with care, from scratch, in such a sensitive manner. One of the best restaurants I've ever been to, and I would...
Read moreHorrible! I’m sorry I feel bad leaving this review and I shouldn’t! Spearfish itself has got to be one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen. We decided to eat across the street from the lodge which I think is owned by the same hotel since I seen the same employees there. We waited about an hour for a cheeseburger dinner and grilled cheese for the kids and I had a trout dinner. The baked potato was hard as a rock, I didn’t send it back do to how long it took to get the food in the first place. We finished quickly and figured ok, they were busy it’s just a fluke. We didn’t see our server at all after our food was brought. We had to ask a different waiter to change our Ice T to a coke since the it was horrible. After we got done eating we sat another 20 minutes waiting for the bill. We walked up to the all the young kids hanging out at the entrance and I asked for the bill since we hadn’t seen our server. they assured me she was en route. Well she never made it, I had to walk out to keep my kids from making to much noise, while my wife then had to ask where she was and she waited for the bill. I’m writing in hopes that things change for the better. Everyone was...
