I grew up in Tampa where there is authentic Cuban food… I came here to Café con Leche for the first time about a month ago. Early January 2021. Knowing authentic Cuban food well, I ordered a dinner for my son and for myself. It's called, Pico de Gallo. The reason I was disappointed was because they do not drain the grease out of their meat. It was so greasy it lesked out of the bags & made a big mess- made me sick to my stomach and I could not finish the food. I asked my 19 year old son if he wanted mine and he said no. I also ordered a beef empanada the same issue was at hand… So greasy it went through the bag very messy- That is not how it should be especially for a restaurant and especially when you're paying $10 per plate. Lunch or dinner all the same pricing- Empanadas $3.50/ $5.00 for 2- The other thing I was disappointed about was, in the to go tray there is a main course pocket and there are two side pockets, our main course was in the two side pockets and the main pocket was full of white rice… I thought to myself that's not right… The main course should be in the main pocket of the to go box. As for the lady upfront and the young girl… They were very sweet and cordial, but they need some work done on their food at least their meals and their empanadas. I have heard that their Cuban sandwiches are very good… But then again there's no reason for those to be greasy is there? I wanted to be fair and give them a second chance so I went over there on my lunch break yesterday to pick up a Café con Leche and two beef empanadas. I called the order in so there would be plenty of time… The empanadas again were horribly greasy and the Café con Leche tasted like the worst coffee I've ever had like a burnt metal taste- I don't believe I will be going back there anytime in the near future. I will just wait till I get to Tampa and go to the famous 'Cuban Sandwich Shop' on N. Florida Ave. - Perfect...
Read moreThere's absolutely nowhere within Volusia county that cooks Cuban foods as well as they do here at Café con Leche. Allow me to explain my reasons for this last statement. First let me say that I am Cuban and grew up into a "we love to cook" family, which in later life led me to be involved in the restaurant and hospitality industry as a Maitre'D in several French, Italian and Spanish restaurants. That being said, I rate "Café con Leche" actually 4.5 stars, taking one half star away from the 5 for location and decor. Every time we have dined there the restaurant and the bathrooms have been clean, the food adequately priced, the menu varied, the portions sufficient and the taste accurately and desivively Cuban. Although not widely known years ago after tasting their bread, we asked if they would sell us a loaf or two, which they kindly did, and ever since they have continued to sell these to a few knowledgeable folks that know this IS the best Cuban bread in the entirety of Volusia county, and add to that as well, they make the best Cuban coffee for many miles around. Overall, as to decor and location, perhaps this not the place for a tuxedo dinner date unless what you really care about is to impress her with great authentic Cuban food. Saul's the owner, and his sister are helpful, kind and extremely nice people. They have also opened two more similar restaurants, one named "Tres Leches" in Daytona Shores and the other, "Arroz con Leche" in Holly Hill. We wish them a lot of success and sincerely thank them for their contribution to help define the greatness of cultural diversity which is America and is what keeps the American dream alive. We highly recommend "Café con Leche" and all three restaurants of which they are the...
Read moreI was really excited to try this place, but after three visits this week I am sadly disappointed. First let me start with something positive. The tacos al pastor we're terrific! Flavorful and spicy. Unusually thick corn tortillas, which I found odd at first but enjoy it immensely. And the coffee I ordered on my first visit which was made by the Guatemalan woman was incredible. Espumita for days! Just like you get it in Calle 8 in Miami.
Now for the bad. The second and third times I visited, the coffee was made by two different individuals who did not seem to have the same understanding of how Cuban coffee is made. In fact, on my third visit the guy actually blamed the machine and got upset with me when I mentioned how much I had loved the coffee on my first visit. His attitude kind of explains why his coffee skills are lacking.
I ordered both beans and potatoes for breakfast one morning and found the beans to be very under seasoned almost as if they were from a can while the potatoes were way too over-seasoned. And the coast was so smushed it was not enjoyable even compared to a cracker.
Still, even though I'm not super impressed they have a big menu and I'm willing to come back and try something different. But now that I think about it, the big men you might be the problem in the first place. There's so many items, and it's both Mexican and Cuban, so there's no way that everything can be good. I think a lot of the stuff is pre-cooked and then reheated honestly. I could be wrong, but I've watched and I'm cooking shows and restaurant makeover shows to realize I'm...
