In the Metrowest area, there are quite a few places to get breakfast and I have been to a quite a few of them and I'm finally willing to lay down my final judgement. There are diners in every town that will whip up eggs and bacon that taste like eggs and bacon. There are deli style quick stops that are great for a bagel sandwich when you have to be at work in 12 minutes. There are Dunkin Donuts on nearly every street corner that will overcharge you for bad coffee and plastic croissants.
Then there is Mauro's and it shines like the Pleiades on clear night. Do you want eggs and bacon, yeah you can get that and it will be eggs and bacon. Gotta be at work in 12 minutes? Go ahead and pop in and they'll take care of you. Are you looking for bad coffee and plastic croissants because you know nothing better? Don't come here, except do and get actual good food. Mauro's is the place for everyone and everyone has a place here. You can get your regular old breakfast which is fine, I'm not shaming you for being bland. If eggs and bacon is bland, then I'm bland and I love it. However, what I love about Mauro's(besides the hard working people that make this a great place - Steve, Mary, Sue, Dean, all of you) is how not bland it really is. The specials they have(which change weekly) are the spice of life. Am I exaggerating? No. The seasonal hash? Take me gently. The exotic loaded tater tot things? I surrender myself to you. The sausage gravy and biscuits with the crumbles of sausage and cheese? I am not worthy.
I will shamelessly praise this place until I die or at least until they offer me one of their punny t-shirts so I can walk around with it on like an old man passive aggressively showing off that I went to Maine Lobster Fest in 1971 and "know a thing or two".
Bad comedy(is it even comedy?) and ridiculous exaggerations aside, Mauro's really is the best place in the area to get breakfast and in my experience, the best place to get breakfast period. There is something for everyone and the folks here will make sure you leave full and happy, whether it's for breakfast or lunch(a whole other review...

Read moreMauro's meets all my criteria for the perfect cafe: delicious, inexpensive, big portions, great daily specials, homemade soups, etc. It's pretty small inside and packed on weekends, but definitely worth the wait. Many that work in the area enjoy the lunch specials ... but many also do "BFL" as we call it (Breakfast For Lunch). Their delicious french toast might just be the reason why, but all of their breakfast items that i have tried are delicious.
The portions are more than reasonable and the food is absolutely delicious, and just about everything is homemade. My fav's are the homemade cream of broccoli and cream of Tomato soups.
To top it all off, the staff is friendly (shout outs to Kathleen, Mary, Steve and Theresa), and the Executive Chef (Dean Lewis) is not only a local himself (grew up in Southborough) but Johnson & Wales grad!
I honestly can't think of a single downside to this restaurant - except maybe that they aren't...
