I hadn't been out to K&M in a while, and the BBQ place closer to me was out of ribs. So off to Spring Hill from Olathe. That was a big mistake.
On the way out, I called to try and place a to go order. Immediately I was asked to wait a minute. When the phone hit the counter, I could hear the same persons ring up a couple of people and talk to some others. I got tired of waiting - maybe 2-3 minutes - and figured it was Saturday night and they were busy, and I would just place an order when I got there.
When I arrived, they were marginally busy, but not packed. There was no wait to be seated. When I asked to place a to go order I was told in no short order, and the implied tone "We're out of pork, and baked potatoes... just so you know." No "I'm sorry..." or "We'd be happy to X if your had your heart set on pork..." and you can forget about a smile; just teenage angst. Anyway, I asked what type of ribs they had. "Pork." What kind of pork ribs? "You know, just the regular ones." So are they baby back, spare, St. Louis? "I'm not sure." Well can you go ask someone (because your work in a BBQ joint and you should probably know this)? [Stomps away; eventually returns.] "They're spare." OK, I will have a half slab short end, beans, potato salad, the grilled chicken salad, and corn dog nuggets with apple sauce. "That'll be $35.00. You want a receipt?" Of course I want a receipt, but you already appear to be put out, so I think I will pass. I proceeded to give her a marginal tip hoping that she will think she's got a good thing going, and may actually at least pretend to care about her job when the next sucker comes along.
I noticed as I sat there, no one that worked there smiled. They all seemed rushed.
So about 10 minutes later, I get an overstuffed paper sack that was further stuffed with my choice of 3 barbecue sauce cups, and a plastic sack containing two 3-part Styrofoam containers. I was on my way home.
I get home, and the first thing we discover is they put hot chicken on top of the salad, so the lettuce is mush.
Then we find that they put the apple sauce not in a portion cup with a lid, but in one of the cells of the three cell Styrofoam container. So much for crunchy corn dog nuggets.
And finally the ribs... oh the poor ribs. The were served wet. But not wet with sauce so much as grease. I get it. I smoke at home, and I know that spare ribs can be a little on the fatty side and can get a little slimy when they sit in the warmer for a while. But when you put the bread in with the meat, YOU PUT IT ON THE BOTTOM to soak up the fat. Not on top.
The beans were Van De Camp pork and beans with sauce... no meat.
The potato salad... well I guess I didn't really want that. I got coleslaw.
And so ends the tragic tail of a restaurant that get's complacent and forgets...

Read moreThis is my absolute beyond the shadow of doubt favorite BBQ restaurant. Drive about 80 miles to eat there multiple times a year.
But I Want to say to whoever is in charge. Your hosts who take count of how many in the party. It's not worth a shit. We got to the restaurant about 20 people in line to be seated. I got to the host station stood there 15 minutes and I still had not determined who the host even was. Then once I finally got my counter people in and we finally got to go to our table. I walked around the corner and seen five Empty Tables and a room that was completely empty nobody in it. While there was at least 20 people standing at the front door waiting to get the count of people in. When I left the restaurant I still wasn't sure who the official host was but what I do know is nobody was doing the job all night. There's this one big girl the walk by me at least 25 times not doing nothing but walking around looking lost. It turned out okay but it was looking like it was going to turn out to be a total embarrassment with the family members that we brought there after bragging how good the place was with everything. But it wasn't until I started making a fuss asking who's the host so I can get my number of people in so we could even eat. The waitress is fantastic and fast the kitchen service fantastic and fast the food excellent could not be better. But the hosting game really needs worked...
