On a weekend visit to Ohio, a group of about 10 decided to satisfy our tastebuds at Rose Goute in Springfield. Upon arrival, I was hesitant because of the empty tables, and before being seated, I realized something in the kitchen was obviously burned. I was further disappointed that many items on the menu were not available. Rice with bean sauce and pate not available on a Saturday evening at a Haitian restaurant is sinful. We asked for a taste of the legume and bouillon. The bouillon was tasty and teased my appetite, however, we quickly realized the burned smell was the legume so we passed after tasting it.
The Griot was tender but lacked seasoning. The side salad was garden fresh, the pikliz excellent, the plantains were not all the way cooked, the mushroom rice was decent, and dissapointingly, the Bouillon was served COLD. Beverages were very limited.
The staff seemed overwhelmed and struggled to keep up with our orders, but was pleasant, apologetic, and our request to reheat the meals were gracefully adhered to . The portions were large enough for 2 plus leftovers. Cost of the meals was somewhat reasonable for the portions. The presentation of the meals were excellent.
The establishment could use more Haitian culture/decor and a good cleaning and update. Overall, the restaurant has a lot of opposition to overcome, but the drive and potential to be a good Haitian Restaurant starts with quality, availability, consistency of authentic food and drink, attentiveness and friendliness of its staff, and the overall ambiance and cleanliness of the space which unfortunately is not yet up to par. I may give them one more try in the...
Read moreTo preface: I'm tired of seeing pity reviews of people seemingly somehow "cultured" for not being honest. I spent a year in Afghanistan and the street food we had was 100x better than this. I'm open minded to a lot of experiences and the least picky eater you'll ever meet. To start, way overpriced. Each dish can serve at least two so mind that if you're trying. Accidentally spent $50 for two meals and a side of plantain fries (still ridiculous). Secondly their menu is trash- no pricing, no real idea of what you're getting (the meals we got came with three plantain fries). Food was bland. The two side salad options were awful and misleading. Look up haitian Russian salad (what we ordered) and what we got was a teensy cup of cole slaw and some oily off-putting sauce separately. Pretty sure the seasoning of the rice and beans was just the non-drained or rinsed 'sauce' of can the black beans. Plantain fries, overcooked. Pork, overcooked. Goat, left on small bone shards (okay, whatever, bone-in meat is usually more flavorful but no heads up) but way overcooked. 80% of this ended up in the trash, it was a damned shame. Rice was the best part and that's not a compliment. Best thing I can say is whoever bought the produce can pick a tomato out.
Separately, hardly a lick of English spoken in there so expect difficulty unless you're lucky enough to have a customer that's bilingual in English and Haitian Creole. Place needs to either get its act together or close, I'll be happy...
Read moreExtremely disappointed avoid this place. I’ve been a loyal customer for a long time, but it’s clear this restaurant has gone completely downhill. Every time I return, the food quality gets worse, the portions get smaller, and the prices keep going up. It’s not just a slight decline it’s a dramatic drop in both quality and value. What’s worse is the customer service. The staff are consistently rude, unprofessional, and seem completely uninterested in helping customers. On my most recent visit, they messed up my order, and when I politely pointed it out, I was met with attitude instead of an apology or any effort to fix it. It was clear they just didn’t care. I’ve tried to support this local business for as long as I could, but enough is enough. I can’t keep making excuses for bad food, bad service, and high prices. There are plenty of other places that actually care about their customers this one...
