On my day off, I pointed my Tahoe south, and just drove. I eventually wound up in Troy, NC at lunch time. A Yelp search found Martha’s Grill in nearby Star, NC It has a 4 star rating, but the data set is REALLY small with only 5 previous reviews. Looked kind of divey, though, so I headed that way.
Definitely a divey place that is well stocked with locals. VERY reminiscent of Tucker’s Grill in Horneytown.
I ordered the giant cheeseburger, a hot dog all the way, and fries.
The cheeseburger was a 3.5 star effort, with a nice char on the outside and a good flavor. That it was cooked slightly too long is my only gripe.
The hot dog was excellent: 4+ stars. As I mentioned in my review of The Dugout, the wiener makes a huge difference in the hot dog experience, and the one Marth’s uses has a really good flavor. I was shocked to learn that it was just a food service hot dog—but it was really a good tasting dog. The chili was good but a little mild, and the slaw was tasty and not too dry and not too wet.
The things that push this to 4 stars are the quality of the hot dog and its price: $1.55 for a very good hot dog is very hard to beat. Furthermore, the staff is very friendly.
One concern I had was the 90.0 sanitation grade. It is three days later and I’m still alive, but this needs to be fixed.
The area is beautiful—at the foot of the ancient Uwharrie Mountains. You can definitely enjoy a lovely drive in the country in this area, have a good lunch, and rub elbows with...
Read moreWill never in my life return to this restaurant, for one the fries were VERY undercooked so I overlooked that then the meat on my burger was still slightly red. So I went to pay for my food and guess what they don't accept credit or debit cards I mean what is this 1945? So as I'm counting change to pay for my food I notice the cook taking her dentures out AND eating butter out of the pan, also grease was covering the power box probably very dangerous and the health department should look into it. Never coming back. I can assure you all this is truthful I am not...
Read moreThis is a great restaurant! Great Southern food. Great people. I heard rumors that it might be closing down soon, so that's unfortunate, the only real problem I have with this place is that is cash only, so definitely keep that in mind. If you're coming in. In it would be five stars if they accept a credit cards. They have an ATM inside but I'm sure it charges fees so not ideal by any means.
Last time I went here me and my friends were trying to find all the cash we had so that we could pay. We didn't realize there was an ATM inside so we were kind of...
