Wow, this is some of the best African food I have ever had! It is great for those who are a bit unfamiliar with the cuisine, too. They offer many soul food items and have a diverse menu, so you'll surely find something that satisfies your tastebuds. I tried the puff puff, meat pie, jollof rice (side portion), and fried plantains. I initially ordered the Mac n cheese but they were out of it. Well, this was still an incredible meal.
This was my first time trying jollof rice, so I didn't quite know what to expect. The price was absolutely amazing for this huge portion! The rice was flavorful, had a nice kick to it, but wasn't too spicy (just a bit on the spicy side for me though). There was a taste of some turmeric in it as well. It was flavorful and a fantastic deal for $7!
The puff puffs were so good and you get 5 of them. They are almost like donuts, but honestly way better. Puff puffs are thick and chewy, which I really enjoyed. Perfect texture, perfect dusting of sugar, amazing price, great portion, and just overall delicious. Can't go wrong with them.
The plantains were pretty good, too. I will say, I've had better plantains elsewhere, but still decent. They were flavorful and caramel used well. The pieces were somewhat small, though, and some of them were hardened (almost unripe).
The meat pie was absolutely delicious. They pack it stuffed with juicy beef and little bits of vegetables. The crust is perfect, too: great texture, a bit buttery, not too doughy, and great flavor as well. This meat pie is huge! One of the largest of this type of pie I've seen anywhere. And it's so delicious, you must try it.
All in all, I am very, very pleasantly surprised with Fabs Restaurant. They make amazing African food, maybe the best in the city. I loved the puff puff and meat pie especially, although everything was tasty. Amazing prices for portions. Check this place out for delicious soul and...
Read moreOverall, I would say it's definitely good but results were widely varied. First off, the menu on their website is outdated (both in terms of the food they offer as well as the prices) and does not reflect their current offerings, so that made ordering over the phone a bit difficult. Some of the food was great–their mac and cheese and mashed potatoes were very tasty and clearly homemade and the smothered chicken, for me, set the standard of how good their cooking can be. Other menu items were nearly inedible–the puff puff was just flavorless dough that tasted of nothing but grease and the BBQ pork ribs were not ribs, but an indistinguishable mass of meat that was frozen in the middle. The prices are pretty reasonable considering the large portion sizes, but still on the expensive side nonetheless. I would love to come back and try some of their other food because it's clear they have something special to offer (would love it if they had a more up-to-date menu readily available), but unfortunately that is hard to justify given the overall inconsistency I've experienced thus far along with the high price point.
PS- They only accept cash, so keep that in mind before dining...
Read moreMy girlfriend ordered through uber eats, paid a total of $80 and we were missing multiple items. The items that we did get we weren't even able to eat because there was a hair in the jollof rice. So insanely disappointing. Ethnic cuisine is SO limited in Pittsburgh and we were willing to pay an obscene amount for what we thought would be authentic and sanitary food. Genuinely so disappointed. The food that we did try prior to finding the hair (which was only a side of cornbread and a spoonful of okra soup) was good- no doubt, as it is African cuisine. But the fact that we missed multiple items on an expensive order AND the items that we did get were dirty is frankly disgusting. Doesn't matter how good the food could have been had we not been turned off by the literal HAIR. 80 DOLLARS for two people because we were genuinely excited to support a local business. We aren't the only review that has had an unsanitary experience with the food either. So so so insanely disappointed. There are other authentic African cuisine locations in Pittsburgh- I recommend you try from there instead if you want something you can actually eat that is worth the price...
