My husband and I tried this place on our anniversary trip. The wait staff was dismissive and a bit rude when we entered as we had trouble figuring out if it was seat yourself or host seating due to a lack of both signage and staff guidance. Eventually, one waitress wiped her hand on a table while scoffing and told us it was clean, which is how we discovered it was a seat yourself establishment. After we found ourselves a table, we were offered waters but were never asked for a drink order beyond that, despite other tables being taken. When our food arrived, I discovered a hair in my food. Our waitress offered to have it remade, to which I declined. I was not offered a menu to order something else or any other compromise so I requested the meal be taken off our ticket and my husband requested a to go box for his food. My husband, who had been able to take a few bites of his burger before leaving, found the food to be a bit mediocre. Finally a note worth mentioning, we noticed a sign inside stating that a google review is good for a free drink as well, which may account for the high rating. I don't know that I'd recommend this place to others, based on our experience.
Edit to respond to the owner: Your unprofessional response is disappointing and has lowered my review of this establishment. You state that my reviews are all negative, which is flatly false. Not only that, this business is the only one I've reviewed in Superior Village, WI ever, as it was our first and only time there. I tend to review outstanding businesses I'd like to promote and particularly disappointing businesses I'd advise against. Yours falls into the latter category for me. Your allegation that we stood by the door for a minute is not only not true, it speaks to your inability to manage your customers as they arrive. We stood by the door searching for a sign or wait staff to indicate seating arrangements. From there, we followed another larger party to nearby one of the wait staffs checkout stations, erronously thinking it was a host area. That was when one of the waitresses, who did not serve us, rudely showed the clean table to us. My husband and I had stated to the waitress who was serving us that we would be fine starting with waters, not that that was the only thing we'd like to drink. She did not take our drink order when she returned which dissatisfied us, a fact you seem to think is arguable. We did order an appetizier of cheese curds, which we found adequate at best, a fact I didn't think necessary to include as it didn't reflect well upon your establishment and was hoping not to pile on as the rest of the experience was so inadequate. I'm unsurprised your kitchen staff were unable to find the hair, as they missed it before it was served the first time. Not only was the waitress shown the hair, she took it out of the food for us further resulting in your staff being unable to locate it. Furthermore, the hair was located in the fries, not the burger which shows your response is out of anger and is even more unprofessional. It is an unreasonable expectation to expect your customers to pay for food with hair or any other health violations in them, so yes I immediately requested it be taken off the bill. I was not offered a remake for "anything". I was offered a remake of exactly the same meal that made me lose my appetite to begin with. I would never recommend this establishment to anyone based upon your handling of this situation. A disappointing conclusion and we wish we would have requested a full refund instead of taking the leftovers home for compost, the only use they could...
Read moreOn our last visit to Superior my friend said "next time we have to come to Mama T's, they have the best Ruben Egg Rolls!" So today we ventured to Superior (we both live in Grand Marais) and I had my first experience with Mama T's. And let me tell you it was quite the experience! It was early in the lunch hour and we had a chance to meet the owner. She was filled with a very warm and welcoming energy. We had a great conversation to start our visit off. I went to the bathroom to wash my hands, the bathroom was super clean, warm, smelled great and had great warm water. I cam back and my friend informed me that he ordered the ruben egg rolls. Not a minute went by and we were informed that they in fact out of these highly spoken of, dream appetizers. But, it gave the bartender and owner an opportunity to explain that their weekly special menu changes every week. I also learned that the hushpuppies are shipped from Louisiana, so we go those. I ordered the Italian Grinder and my friend got the Grouper Sandwich (the grouper is also shipped up from Louisiana) While we we waiting for our food we chatted with the owner a little more. We got to know the owners youngest daughter, who also happens to be an up and coming BBQ pitmaster. I asked her if she liked doing the meats, she said "I love it!" I followed up with "are you good at it" with complete confidence she said "yup! Someday I'm coming for my dad" We got our food and it was beyond our expectations, I can't wait to eat there again. While we were sitting there a few more of the owners family members showed up. Her son was setting up for a car show, and proudly showed me pics of his show car. The place was filled with merch and I took home a bottle of their garlic sauce, can't wait to have it on eggs in the morning. Our bartender was great, super cute, with a great smile. She was super knowledgeable and our service was outstanding. I bartended for years, I have always kinda had a rule not to flirt with the waitstaff. If our bartender wouldn't have been so busy taking care of a bunch of other tables, that rule would have been really hard to follow.
All in all, this was way more than just lunch, we felt welcomed into the place with open hearts. Out tummies were filled with amazing food and our hearts were filled with friendship. I can't wait to go back and try lots more for...
Read moreI am struggling a bit with this review, as there were hints of delight and disappointment here. We were in on Friday night. I had read reviews of the place and given the name of the establishment I was hoping to dive into either a rack of ribs or a heap of brisket, either option slapping me in the face with smoke flavor. Turns out, the only smoked options last night were pulled pork and wings. Our server said that "sometimes" you serve ribs. We went ahead and ordered. My wife had a bacon cheeseburger basket - I took a nibble and it was very well cooked, nice crust on the burger, well seasoned, and the fries were excellent too. I had the poblano pork mac and cheese, plus an order of the smoked wings. Mac and cheese can vary from place to place, and I think yours was cooked very well, nice and creamy. Nice heat from the poblanos on the pork. (I was picking up cinnamon somewhere - was it from the cheese sauce or the pork?) Only thing missing was, um, smoke! Couldn't pick up any smoke out of the meat. Didn't prevent me from demolishing the bowl, though. Then, I got to the wings. Big, (not sure of the right term here but) unseparated wings, with the drummie, flat and tip included - I like that! Had the peach BBQ sauce on them. Came out hot, huge amounts of meat on the wings, but again, no smoke! I had 3 at the restaurant and 3 more at the hotel, try as I may I'm not sure they were really smoked. (Server said the wings smoked for 12 hours - wings are generally smoked for 1-2 hours.) Place was very busy but new customers could generally sit within ~15 minutes. Our server Kylie was excellent - sold the menu well and kept her awesome smile no matter how busy it got. In conclusion, we had a good time last night with good food, but was disappointed in the lack of smoke in the food, and the lack of "traditional" smokehouse options like ribs and brisket, especially given that the word "smokin" is in the name of...
