We ate here late on a Friday night (last night). We had never been to the Twelve Points area and were surprised with how busy it was. We were a bit apprehensive to stop at first just because of some nefarious looking characters around. It was fine though, we had no problems.
Restaurant is spacious and colorful. They were busy for how late it was. We're from Illinois so everything is an hour ahead for us due to timezone difference. I liked the dessert case when you walk in. My oldest loves flan, that definitely would have sold him on one, but he wasn't with us.
My wife and I do not eat any animals. I never like to venture away from my trusted restaurants. I've been a vegetarian since 1994 and I really, really don't want meat in my food. Mexican restaurants are tricky because most have a "vegetarian menu" but then use animal ingredients and prepare vegetables on shared grills alongside meat. There was no info from vegetarians or vegans for Mis Tres Potrillos in the reviews. My Spanish is terrible so I can't communicate well when ordering.
I'm thankful our server spoke English very well and understood my request to have vegetables cooked separate from meat, preferably on a clean surface, and that I did not want meat. He also knew about some of the side items not being vegetarian. He confirmed the rice had chicken and the beans had pork ingredients. Somewhat disappointing we couldn't have those but really do appreciate he knew and let us know.
We ordered two vegetable fajitas. I love when restaurants use squash and zucchini in their fajita mix and they do. We did ask for no mushroom and I did find one big one and few smaller pieces in my dish. Not a fan but I can pick them out. The vegetables were pretty dark which worried me they'd been cooked on the grill nearby meat. However, they didn't taste like meat so all good.
Our server was probably wondering what we were going to eat when ordering. Veggies, no mushroom, no sour cream, no cheese, no rice, no beans... He read through it all and asked about guacamole. I said yes, love guacamole, lots of guacamole please! Haha, he hooked us up on the guac (thank you)! He was very nice and made sure a couple of times everything looked and tasted okay.
There was a lot of food! It all tasted great and we both enjoyed our dinner. I did have to order another pack of tortillas as they only provide two. I typically eat three but scarfed four down and still had vegetables left over. I really think three is the right amount for fajitas. I didn't pay attention if they charged extra for guacamole or tortillas. The pico was great and and added a nice little spice to it.
One last thing. The chips were good but the salsa was fantastic! I don't like a lot of spice but do enjoy a little. The salsa has a little kick and great flavor. Most excellent, wish I had some right now!
So any vegetarian or vegans out there wondering about Mis Tres Potrillos. Sounds like the rice and beans have animal ingredients but they will accommodate otherwise. Our food was really good and I wouldn't mind going back. Service staff was nice and made sure everything was good. The owner came by and checked on us and was friendly on our way out. Thanks for the...
Read moreUpdate: I have been 3 times since my first review. I have tried many other entries and find the food to be very pleasing. My first visit was limited to a combo plate. My thinking was if they paid attention to it that the same could be said of other items. I was wrong. This place is worthy of a visit and i hope the best for them. I visited for a late lunch. The dining room was clean but mostly empty. Thats not unusual for a 3:30 dining time. The server offered a table of choosing. They have lunch specials but those end at 3. I wanted to see how much care they take with sauces and ingredients. I ordered a combo plate with Taco enchilada and burrito. While waiting I had some tortilla chips and house salsa. The chips were fresh and the salsa had good flavor, due largely to the red onion. They had Pepsi products to drink. The meal arrived shortly thereafter. It went downhill from this point. The sauces were bland. In all honesty, it was not as flavorful as Taco bell. I took no more than two bites of each item, then asked for my check. I really was hoping for more. The entrees were the let down. If they can't do a decent enchilada, there is little point to trying...
Read moreFood was good, service was dismal at best. Our waiter hardly spoke English, which I guess is a good thing to those wanting Authentic Mexican, but it made for a very difficult meal. At one point 3 men were at our table trying to figure out that we were saying we wanted queso. They said "chips with cheese," and I was like, "yes, queso." It was a communication crap shoot that ended in us telling our waiter that we no longer wanted the "cheese chips." Only to be delivered something 10 mins after that, 20 mins after we'd ordered it, that looked like something thrown together at the 11th hour by a child trying to play cook at home.
Obviously I'm being very brutal - it's just that I had very high expectations for this restaurant, and maybe we just got everyone on an off night. For that potentiality, I have given the place 2 stars instead of 1. Again, the food was good. The service was like we were speaking two totally different languages, well...
