Oh, Chappell Hill Bakery & Deli, you glorious orange beacon of deliciousness on Highway 290! I rolled into this Texas gem expecting a quick pitstop, but what I got was a full-on flavor rodeo. This place is like if a Czech grandma and a BBQ pitmaster had a lovechild that decided to open a restaurant. And let me tell you, it’s a match made in foodie heaven. First up, the venison summer sausage—dear lord, it’s so good I half-expected it to whisper, “You’re welcome” as I took a bite. Smoky, savory, and just the right amount of gamey, it’s the kind of sausage that makes you want to write a country song about it. Then there’s the sausage kolaches, little pillows of dough hugging perfectly spiced sausage like they’re afraid to let go. I’m not saying I’d drive from Houston just for these, but… okay, I totally would. The pecan roll? It’s basically a cinnamon-dusted hug from a Texas pecan tree, sticky-sweet and so addictive I had to hide the second one from myself (spoiler: I found it and ate it anyway). And don’t get me started on the poppy seed kolache. It’s like someone took a Czech fairy tale, baked it into a pastry, and sprinkled it with magic. Fluffy, sweet, and just a tad nutty—kind of like my favorite uncle. The vibe here is pure small-town charm, with friendly folks who make you feel like you’re crashing a family cookout (in a good way). The big orange building has enough seating to handle a crowd, and the parking lot’s big enough for your F-150 and your cousin’s too. Sure, it can get busy, but that’s just proof the locals and road-trippers alike know a good thing when they taste it. If you’re cruising through Chappell Hill and don’t stop here, you’re basically committing a Texas food crime. Grab a kolache, snag some sausage, and let the pecan roll steal your heart. This place is a must-visit, and I’m already dreaming of my next trip. Keep smokin’ and...
Read moreAs many times my family and I have driven to Austin to visit my brother and his family; I've always wanted to stop at Chappell Hill and eat their BBQ. Of course you can purchase their sausage at the grocery store and it's incredible; however, the experience of walking into a huge building with the magnificent aroma of fresh BBQ, a beautiful display of all types of Southern desserts homemade, long, shiny picnic tables with benches throughout the restaurant, Southern hospitality at it's finest (not only from the staff, but the patrons as well). The line is swift, they ask you how you want your brisket cut 😮 I've never been asked that before. It was like seeing a golden halo surrounding this young man. I personally love brisket that is super moist and you can taste the smokiness along with their dry rub. Their BBQ sauce is out of this world delicious!!! I vote they bottle it and sell it at grocery stores. I would stock up....just wish id somehow, they could also sell the best part of the brisket (as mentioned above). Honestly, if you find yourself driving to Austin and on 290, watch for the signs for Chappell Hill, find the crossover, pull in and feast on some of the BEST BBQ (actually it is the best), you won't be disappointed. If you don't have a reason to drive to Austin, no worries, take a day trip with the fam, visit Washington on the Brazos.....then BBQ time. As mentioned above, you can purchase their sausage at the grocery store (of course it's my fav out of all sausages out there)....
Read moreBakery is great and their BBQ is okay. Rated 2 stars due to the fact we have been numerous times and the inexperienced staff have been extremely difficult to order with. Note there are some nice staff there, we just are unlucky, I guess.
Issues have happened multiple times, the worst was on1/2/22. We gave a simple order (in person) and they essentially messed up the meat selection 3 times (after preparing and plating the food). Then the kid stated we should just take what he cut up for us (totally not what we ordered) and pay for it...
To make this experience even more irritating, the bakery gave us Kolaches instead of turnovers, made a negative remake about how we were ordering alot and that he needed more help (we ordered 5 baked goods behind the glass and no one else was in line), then proceeded to complain about getting what we ordered correct (we read him the 5 items from our list for the family). It was rather shocking the lack of effort and then attitude these people had today.- For the record, we were taken aback by the way these employees acted and never said anything rude or made any demands yet still were treated as such. Again, it was a young guy helping us that didn't seem to understand common courtesies.
Not planning on going to this place again, unfortunately, as we...
