You need more wait staff, and you need them RIGHT NOW. I arrived around 2pm Saturday 10-9-21 for a late lunch, and it wasn't jam-packed inside, which was a little strange (because of the scarecrow festival) but I later found justified. First two beers I ask for you're sold out of, no big deal. Ordered a corona, Hush puppies, combo catfish/shrimp plate. Had an EXTREMELY patient older couple sit down right next to me and order their drinks. (This will be relevant in a sec) Was brought and finished the simple salad and was waiting for the entree's. No worries, the game is on. Sipped my beer. Waited for the food. Waiiiiting... Ok! Here it comes! "Do you want ketchup, cocktail or tartar sauce sir?" Sure! "All of em!" She looked at me funny when I asked for Malt Vinegar though. When she comes back to drop those off, I ask for another beer. (No ice water was provided, so why not another beer?) I continue eating.. beer's gone now, but why not just keep eating, she should walk by at some point and drop off my 2nd corona, right? ...right? So that never happened. So I left half my meal untouched and it eventually got cold, just waiting for a drink. By that time, the other couple had JUST gotten their drinks. The waitress was back at the other's couple's table, explaining that they had no more ketchup bottles for them to use, could they please use packets? I volunteered mine since I wasn't using them any longer. During this, I managed to talk to your ONLY waitress to tell her I didn't want the second beer she'd forgotten and that I wanted to pay and leave. Followed her up front, paid, and left. Now, I've worked in the back and in the FOH.I have no idea why you have someone that could be taking orders, just standing behind the wall filling glasses for drinks since she could be taking half of the tables. I still left your girl a small tip but if you want to keep her you'll schedule a little better, especially during your town's Scarecrow Festival. SO! If you want a little TL:DR (summary): Basic fried food, nothing that knocks your socks off but decent fare for the prices. Avoid any kind of busy times; I figure if there are only 2-3 cars in the lot you'll get better service with the obvious staffing issues...
Read moreMy first time to visit the relatively new A & J Seafood & Steak was for dinner a few nights ago. We usually stop at Chappell Hill Barbecue and Bakery for chopped beef sandwiches and kolaches. But the sign next door caught my eye. They had listed my favorite food... Buffet. So we pulled up to check out what the new kids on the block had to offer.
As we walked in, I was met with disappointment. The buffet line was not open. The waitress explained the the buffet was a lunchtime feature. Understandably so. Chappell Hill is a small town by pretty much anyone's standard with a population of around 2500. So I wasn't shocked that the buffet wasn't running
But, hey, were here. We'll try out the menu items. They have a surprisingly full menu that would challenge menus at many big city eateries. With a good selection of steaks and seafood items, there was something to satisfy pretty much any meat-eater. And the prices are pretty reasonable. They even offer a double meat hamburger for (I think) $7.99, or maybe $8.99. Now before you say, "Hey, that's not that good of a deal," let me point out that the double burger is a 1 lb burger! I seem to recall that the bacon version was $1.00 more. Check back, I will verify or correct on my next trip up this week.
As for the main part of the report, I am pleased to report that my initial disappointment over the buffet vanished when our food arrived. Catfish, shrimp, french fries, and onion rings. Let me start with the onion rings. There are two things that make or break a diner style restaurant, onion rings an chicken fried steak. Their onion rings passed with flying colors! A large mound of perfectly battered, thickly sliced onions, fried to a crisp perfection. The catfish were cornmeal battered, tender and juicy. And the portions were large. The shrimp were large, not butterflied (is that a real word?), flour battered and cooked to a nice golden color. Maybe a minute less in the fryer would have been good. The fries were thin-cut, slightly crispy on the outside with a baked potato texture inside.
Yep, this place is a keeper! Check back. I made it back for the lunch buffet 36 hours later. I'll post that...
Read moreI found this about place this place too late. I passed by it many times, but I just didn't go to this establishment. I finally got to make it in to eat at this restaurant, and I will say, the customer service is too amazing. I don't know the lady's name who waited on me and my wife, but I can say she genuinely cared about our experience the whole time we were there, and when my wife steak was not cooked to her expectations... This lady made sure to help us even when we were ok with the order, and we're going to eat the steak because we don't like sending food back to the kitchen 😑. She was great. I learned that they have a buffet every day 👏 🥰 . I usually visit the same type of restaurant in Brenham and Hempstead, but this restaurant is better than both of them and have more selections than Hempstead and Brenham. I ordered a stuffed flounder and saw that they had crawfish ettoufe sauce, so I asked if they could top the flounder with the sauce, and they did, and I can say it was amazing. I usually always order okra as an appetizer, and they have very crispy Okra. Now, it could have used a pinch of salt, but I just did it myself once it arrived at the table piping hot like I love it. This place is a must try if you're passing through, and if you are in the surrounding towns. This is my new spot to frequent now, especially when I'm passing through and hungry. I have only attended this restaurant once, so I will hold one star for future attendance. The place we were sitting was bad because it was cold outside and everytime the door opened it was horrible for me wife, so I just went outside to get her my coat, and she said it was perfect. I hate that I didn't take pictures as usual, but now it gives me another reason to go back and order...
