We’ve been enjoying Granny D’s for several years, and love absolutely everything about the place. Canyon Lake is blessed to have this establishment in the community. We know its a destination spot for breakfast in the area, so we wake up, pull ourselves together, and go as early as we can because there is usually a wait, especially on weekends. We plan for Granny D’s. Today we were lucky and got a table immediately. In the past we have waited about an hour, and didnt mind because we knew the food and service would be well worth it. When a restaurant has a pile of people waiting outside, thats a good indication that the place is doing something right inside. After all, how many people could be wrong about the same thing? Ive never met Granny but I feel like Ive known her all my life. The magic starts as soon as you walk in where love is in the air as the aroma of sizzling bacon, fluffy pancakes, waffles, and biscuits swaddles you up like a warm hug. Each time we stop in for breakfast, it feels like we are in her dining room and she’s excited for us to enjoy what she’s just whipped up. Everything we have devoured tastes just like it should. The pancakes, waffles, french toast, fried eggs, bacon, country style gravy, biscuits etc., all of it is spot on. Granny’s Jacked Up Waffle is my go to. I opt for all bacon, so not only is it made with bacon inside the batter, its topped with a few crispy strips also. The only thing that makes it better is a little bit of cheddar. The ambience is perfect too. Nostalgia in every detail. The decor sells the illusion of being at Granny’s house. The mix matched coffee mugs are one of my favorite details. You never know what mug you’ll get. This morning, my mug was from The Ritz Carlton. Made me want sit a while, enjoy my coffee, and listen to Granny tell me about her visit to that fancy hotel. The different colored plates are quirky and fun, reminds me of the Fiestaware my family table is set with. We did notice a bit of a recent renovation this morning on the inside. They were still in the process of putting everything back in place. Like pictures on the walls, and the coffee mugs were moved around. The ambience use to be a comforting, inviting, warm, yellow glow, which we prefer that over the bright LED’s any day. We asked our server why the changes were made and she told us because some online reviews were bad mouthing Granny, and her style. Well Granny, if youre reading these reviews, and I hope you are, please ignore those negative comments. For every one person who doesnt like what youre doing, I promise there are hundreds more just like us that love your style, your vision and what you and your staff have worked hard creating. We are your people. People like us are your people. Those people talking bad are not your people. They belong at IHOP, and IHOP can keep em. Honestly I feel bad for the people who dont like the scene at Granny D’s. From the sounds of it their childhood was lame, and not nearly as loving as mine. That or they are just entitled, instant gratification casuals who dont embrace the best things in life are worth waiting for. However, Not everything is for everyone, so Whatever flips your pancake right? When we are at Granny D’s we feel loved like biscuits & gravy. This roadside diner is magical, and Service is always fantastic...
Read moreI don’t believe in trashy 1 star reviews, but I do believe in an honest critique. I also believe we can all raise the standard in hospitality by contributing effort on both sides, between the ones providing the service, and the recipients.
Our trip to Granny D’s with others was somewhat planned. We were looking for a nice peaceful lunch. We drove an hour to Canyon Lake with the intent on having a good lunch and to look at all the new water in the lake. A short Saturday day trip.
The turkey sandwich and burger was enjoyed by my companions, but my experience was different. My critique encompasses the food, and environment solely, as the service was friendly.
The Chicken and Waffle plate arrives with no embellishment. Like it was prepared and plated by a tired mother who’s on her way to her next waitressing shift, but trying to get a quick meal on the table for the kids before leaving out the door again.
“Blap” goes the plate with two golden and crunchy chicken tenders bouncing on top of a soft and powdery waffle bed. Later vegetable spread arrives with what I’m certain is maple flavored corn syrup accompanying it.
I definitely knew about the supreme unlikeliness that there would be real, pure maple syrup on the table, I choice I made, but the margarine was a bummer I have to admit. There’s just no replacing real butter and real maple syrup on a waffle. I think even a swirl of Reddiwhip would have made it feel a little more thoughtful.
The consistency of the waffle was similar to wet pelletized bedding. Sawdust like. I ate one pull-apart-piece with limited corn syrup, and felt the only way to wash it down was to add more corn syrup, and that just wasn’t going to happen. If this is a pre-packaged pancake mix, I’d try a new one.
For the record, I was raised in an Italian family, you eat what is put before you, “Mangia!” you eat it all, and you’re polite. I don’t think I’ve not finished a plate in over 20 years. The reason? The texture of the waffle made it hard to swallow. Not a decadent breakfast pastry, somehow dry and wet simultaneously.
As for the atmosphere, the floor of the restaurant is tiled and sound bounces around wildly. I love the bubble of a happy cafe full of patrons, but it was challenging to speak with the others at the table. Anyone hard of hearing would especially have a difficult time, and might as well be eating alone. This was approximately noon on a Saturday, one ought to expect it to be busy, but dang it was loud.
I’m an appreciator of the long standing, local diner, type of place, and wish a lifetime of successful and thoughtful hospitality to Granny D’s. I felt compelled to provide my critique as this is the type of community place that should stick around for many years to come, and small thoughtful changes can improve the relationship between restauranteurs and the recipient of their...
Read moreThis is one of the best places my family and I have ever eaten. It was our first vacation in Canyon Lake. Some friends who had been to Granny D's told us it was a must go to place to eat. Let me tell you something it is definitely a place you have to try while visiting Canyon Lake. It is only open for breakfast and lunch. We went on a late Sunday morning and the wait was an hour. Now I was hungry as a tick on a Chihuahua so a hour seemed like quite the wait. That being said this restaurant was on one of those food shows according to the sign on the door. So I gambled and waited for our spot to open. Right around an hour our name was called and at that point I felt like a won a raffle. I was really hangry. So much I was grunting like a caveman instead of using words. The service was excellent for how busy they were. The food tasted like everything was made from scratch. The biscuits and gravy were by far the best I have ever experienced. Gramps favorite was the omelette I got. It was huge with all kinds of meats in it. Grits was the option I went with for the side. Just like everything else they were freaking awesome. The salsa that it came with was delicious too. My son got himself a pancake. The biggest pancake I've ever seen. Had to be 12" or more across the plate. The bacon tasted like it was being cut fresh off the pig itself in the back. The food was so worth the wait. In fact it was so good we went back that Tuesday before we left so we could enjoy it one more time before we headed home. No wait this time. We did a lot of fun stuff while in Canyon Lake but Granny D's will forever be on my mind till we make it back next year. If this review helps you pls leave a...
