My wife and I went looking for an alternative Chinese food restaurant to add to our monthly takeout rotation. Tonight, we selected Hong Kong Chinese. Our order consisted of the following.. Sweet and Sour Delight w/ white rice General Tso's Chicken w/ fried rice Hot and Sour Soup Flat Fried Won Tons
Sweet and Sour Delight w/ white rice: Very large portion of chicken, pork, and shrimp. The sauce was ok, but lacked the traditional zing that comes from a "made from scratch" sweet and sour sauce. No pineapple, no onion, no bell pepper. I was just fried meat and jarred dipping sauce. The rice was good though.
General Tso's Chicken w/ fried rice: Overall it was a mediocre attempt. Definitely not a traditional sauce. Jalapeno peppers instead of black chilis to spice the sauce. It was savory without the slightly sweet that is normal. No broccoli garnish....and...NO RICE AT ALL. Not even white rice.
Hot and Sour Soup: Obviously converted egg drop soup. Was thin, savory hot water soup with vinegar to make it sour, and not spicy at all. Not even close to what hot and sour soup should be.
Fried Flat Won Tons: They were fried. They were flat. They were won tons. No dipping sauce, no mustard, but good without them.
Overall, it was on par with any mall food court eatery, and should be ashamed to charge what they do. Panda Express may have been a better choice. Don't waste your money or...
Read moreWe decided to try this place out since it had a high rating. We were very disappointed. I ordered beef and broccoli with steamed rice and my husband ordered pepper chicken with fried rice. Our waitress must have been overwhelmed with serving us and another large party. She brought over food but only my order was correct. My husband told her again what he'd ordered. She came back with pepper steak and steamed rice. He told her again what he'd ordered. She insisted that what she'd brought was pepper chicken when you could clearly see that the meat was dark (beef). He told her again what he'd ordered. By the time his correct order finally came, I was done eating. I wasn't pleased with my food. The beef and broccoli lacked flavor and the broccoli had a bitter taste, so I just ate the meat. I figured I'd not send it back since she was not providing the best service. One lady came over to apologize. I'm not sure if she was an owner or manager. While there, I asked her if they charged for soda refills and she told me they charge $1.30. I mentioned that since we'd been inconvenienced twice, refills should be free. She just walked away and didn't acknowledge my comment. They didn't try to compensate us for our inconvenience. They could've at least not charged us for our sodas. Needless to say, this will definitely be our first and last time...
Read moreThis is a quiet jewel of a restaurant on 2920 that you should definitely check out. My passion is Orange Beef and I have had it at restaurants all around Houston, from high-end downtown to cozy family owned in the burbs. Well, guess what? I just found THE BEST Orange Beef I have ever had at Hong Kong restaurant, and it is on the luncheon menu for a bit over $7. And that included the soup, egg roll, the neat little bowl of fried wontons and my soft drink! The egg drop soup was tasty; but the star was the beef dish. The beef was sliced thin, fried very crispy on the outside, dripping in medium spicy orange beef sauce...and delectably tender and juicy on the inside. Pure heaven...I assure you! And the service? Friendly, and attentive. Look for Nancy...a jewel of a server who is friendly, outgoing and delightful. I watch as people wandered in, and the staff greeted them with, "Hello! How have you been?" And then a discussion began on what they have been doing. In this day and age...what a wonderful atmosphere! Like coming home to family. Perfect. So the next time you want excellent Chinese food in a lovely relaxed atmosphere in the dining room with impeccable starched table cloths and a great wait staff...this is your place. Wish I could give them more...
