After hearing about Peppe’s, and being lifelong avid Griggs fans, we were excited to try Peppe’s.
The wait staff, especially Alberto, is excellent. He was attentive, paid close attention, and delivered our orders rapidly with an elegant attitude. Kudos to him!
We are native El Pasoans, and have high standards regarding border cuisine. We do remember the food from Griggs rather well, having practically grown up there, so here goes:
The chile con queso lacks flavor and heat – we realize that many people in the area complain about the heat level of chile, but some heat is necessary for a full-bodied and satisfying CCQ. Peppe’s version is bland, and actually sweet, apparently in deference to those with easily frightened palates. The salsa is the same – bland, with no “hit” whatsoever.
The light offerings (enchiladas made with steamed tortillas) are a nice menu option, but the tortillas dissolve into a mushy mealy mess once the extremely watery “sauce” is applied. The chile Colorado (not a “light” item) is likewise bland, pale, and lacking in any heat or spicy body whatsoever. The slaw, a Griggs signature item, lacks pepper, which is the ingredient that used to put it over the top. Are customers really so averse to anything with seasoning, spice, or anything containing capsaicin? The small offering of pinto beans was dry, probably from sitting underneath a heat lamp.
Peppe’s, you can definitely do better. One more thing – there was a chicken bone in...
Read morePeppe's is a hole-in-the-wall little eatery just hidden inside a strip mall just off of Doniphan Dr. The food is very good with a notable speciality, a wonderful staff and reasonable prices. My son and I walked in around 7pm to get an evening meal. The restaurant was full, and the two dining rooms were buzzing. Several large tables had big family gatherings with obvious good cheer going on.
We got a small table quickly and were served chips and salsa . We ordered a super nacho appetizer with half ground beef and half chicken meat on it. It was excellent, loaded with cheese , refried beans jalepeno peppers and meat.
For an entree I ordered a combo #3 which included a chili Relleno, enchilada and rolled taco, along with rice , beans and shredded beef chili. The meal was good and had huge portions. The real highlight was the buttery and delicious chili relleno.
My son ordered the 3 chili rellenos meal and he likewise had a great experience.
The portions were large and we both left full and happy. The enchilada, rolled taco and other items were good, though not amazing. Their signature item was definitely the wonderful chili relleno! If you love them, this is a good place to check out.
The staff was so nice and helpful with was a delight to dine...
Read moreThis restaurant is just as good as it is bad. Many of the flavors and items are perfect and on point. However, some of the portion sizes are extremely tiny. The french fries are just awful and I believe they’re using store bought crinkle cut fries. The prices are extremely high considering the location of this restaurant and it’s overall ambience. The ambience in itself is atrocious. It feels like I’m dining at my abuelitas house. That being said it seems as if this place has some die hard fans who like it anyways. The hole in the wall feel and the absurd pricing don’t make sense. 3 plates, refills for 3 people and a small portion of guacamole ended up costing $60.33. It should also be noted that the restaurant does not offer fountain drinks and you will be charged per can on refills. I can recommend plenty of other Mexican restaurants with better ambience and food that are easier...
